For a section of the M1 for 46miles, I got 35mpg out of the 5.4ltr V8 at an average of 52mph. when i filled up i took a mileage reading and compared that with the one before the trip. I Averaged 28mph over a 235mile trip, which would certainly have seen speeds above 80mph, but over the majority of the trip it averaged out at 59mph. The SLK, over the 9000miles I had, normally averaged between fill ups, of 23-25mpg, with the odd 28mpg for long smoothly temperate journeys, and one low point of 16mpg, which had several miles of being slung up and down a 2mile runway at speed reaching 164mph.

To campare that with a similar trip in the 6.1ltr, I got a staggeringly good 18.9mpg. Hmmmmm, must try harder so am gonna give Shell V power a got for a few tanks and see if i can get an improvement.

320CE 18 in town, 25 on a run. Pretty poor for a high-tech engine in a not-very-heavy body.

Blame that on the low gearing and no torque converter lock-up.

Shame, but it does mean your always near the power-band if some speed-Kevin comes up behind you.....

I was just thinking. I know there have been posts on individual cars and what MPG should be expected.
But thought a thread stating our cars and MPG would be useful to do a quick comparison.

I and many others have our present car in our signatures. :p
So stating clearly model and year would be good.:D

At present I am averaging 37 to 40 Mpg mainly city driving.
Which is a hell of a lot more than I was expecting.
My figures are estimates only tank warning light to warning light.

Barry

Lots of cold starts and a great deal of sitting in traffic jams, in the city centre, over the Christmas period, have now reduced my MPG to well under 30.:(
Roll on summer:cool:

SL320 and C200 MPG

My M104 straight 6, 320 SL (36,700 miles-1997) does between 23-25 mpg with varied driving. My C200 (103,000 miles - 1995) does 28.5-30 mpg. Both tested by filling up, zeroing the odo and then driving until empty. Refill to the brim then work out what the mileage is.

It depends upon what your tank size is...

Took mine out this AM for a quick poodle around. (Looking for a motor for a friend)

All local stop start garbage, barely got it warmed up. 32 miles in total and averaged (according to trip thing) 10.4 MPG. Still fun though :)

I recently travelled from Caernarfon, North Wales to the NEC in Birmingham to see MPH 06. I wasn’t hanging around in my SL320 (R129) which has the straight six engine and managed 27.63 MPG.

99 C200 auto - the other half's car.
26-27 average on a 5 mile round trip in traffic. On a good motorway run though, it was 34 - actual, not computor.

2000 E320 CDi estate mpg:

Worst (5 miles in winter) - 26 to 28 mpg

Motorway (100 mile trip summer) - 40 mpg (80 mph) to 42 mpg (70 mph)

Best (A roads in summer 50 mile trip with a light foot) - 46 mpg

Average over 10K - 34 mpg

Can't wait to see the first diesel F1 car (might rekindle my interest in the sport). Diesel v Petrol should make for interesting racing.

Running on petrol best around 34MPG taking it steady on Mway worst 22MPG around town

Running on LPG best 26 MPG worst 18

I average mainly 23 MPG having covered about 18,000 miles which at half the price of petrol (or less) equates to over 46 ! :)

I do wonder if a larger engined car would actually be better as 2.0L is a bit small for such a big car

You could use the song "anything that you can do I can do better" when it comes to the larger engine verses the smaller one in the same weight of car.

Had a relaxing 200 mile drive around North Wales in my E300TD only last weekend, filled the tank to the brim before we set out, tried not to exceed the road speed limits anywhere, filled it back up when we got home, worked out at 44 mpg. I am more than pleased with that!

Several years ago we had a Ford Capri 3.0 (for my sins) with an auto choke. My wife rang me up one really cold February day at work to say she had run out of petrol when she'd gone shopping locally. Unbeknown to her there was a gallon can of fuel in the back. I told her to fill up and start her up and she'd be on her way. One hour later she called me again to say the car had run out again; she had done 9.6 mile!

I suppose things have improved slightly

In the early eighties I owned a 1971 455ci Pontiac Transam and a 1971 351ci Mustang Mach One, I used to run out of fuel almost every week because I simply couldn't believe how much petrol I'd used! I used to convince myself that the tank gauges were faulty!

Ahh - those were the days!

I to confess to having a few non mb cars which were thirsty Capri 3.0 ghia auto, Granada 3.0ghia auto, Rover 3500 sdi auto, Never got more than 20mpg out of any of them, My current 320ce is about 20mpg overall but I like my right foot to be doing what it does best,
Got the car so I dont mind what I get to the gallon, just seem to have to many greenified friends who think im not being pc,
Who cares any way?
