There was a report a while back on the BBC that if you thrash the engine to 2000rpm but back off at higher revs, you get best economy as you move the engine rapidly out of its 'inefficient zone' and into its most economical. I tried looking for the report, but cannot find it. An alternative report on mpg, which is quite reasonable is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A5043575

As posted, C220cdi, up and down yorkshire dales or stop starting in town, circa 40mpg, long distance up to 66, but recent check driving upto legal limit of 70, got 57.3 (photo).

ML270cdi returns approx ~30mpg, lowest Ive had is 22mpg at 125-130mph on dial with Ultimate diesel. Highest has been a tad short of 40, over a 1000 miles with turbo disabled!!

A140 is returning high 40's in day to day running, but at Autobahn speeds, ~40. Lowest Ive had so far is 36mpg but using 95 Octane fuel. 91 Octane seems to return the best mpg for this engine.

Challenge in progress

Always ready for a challenge, looks like I've got some work to do here!

My C270 is on 45mpg in the 10,000 or so miles since the last service. On long motorway runs, I've had 52mpg recorded, so it looks like I'm a way behind at the moment!

My "since reset" mpg is now over 45mpg, and I achieved 57.4mpg just before taking the attached photograph (taken at Peterborough Services on the A1 following a non-stop run from Canterbury).

I'm still working on the C270 record, though!

Hi....C32 estate 23.9 mpg with mixed driving, however during a recent French trip, with modest load returned 25.8 mpg. I think the trip is a bit optimistic but despite the thirst I love everything about this car, fantastic....Den

Playing the mpg game

on the somber drive to work I have found myself trying to see how high I can get the mpg reading and then trying to beat it. My record is 60.7 mpg (C220 CDI) but this has proved for me anyway hard to top and required alot of smooth driving, coasting downhill and watching in the distance for slower traffic to plan my next move. sad I know, but a challenge is a challenge.

Not sure if you really mean coasting, but there are all sorts of reasons not to do that. Apart from anything else, the car is still using some fuel with the engine on tickover.
If you let it run downhill on the over-run, then it uses no fuel at all, it's cut off.

The watching in the distance thing is always good practice.

New Vito 120 xlwb. Done 3k across Europe from new/reset... 27.9 mpg loaded and on the euro speed limits. If I really try i can get 38 mpg but its really boring and sensible. The 3 litre lump is superbly efficient a credit to its design. I am really pleased with performance; the torque is incredible and diesel consumption when used with care is extraordinary.

Hi,
I'm not convinced about the trip computer readings, and have never yet found an accurate one in a car that comes closer than 20% to the actual fuel that I put in the tank. I have to say that my experience is that the computer is typically 10% to 20% optimistic about what I'm actually using.

What is good is that they give a nice relative reading. If the readings show good economy you are driving economically, just not to the figures on the screen..!

My E200 averages about 28mpg these days (mix of town and motorway, brim to brim fueling). About 37mpg on the motorway. It's about 10% under what Merc claim (31mpg) so not too bad.

Autoexpress just did a real world MPG test in last week's edition. Realistic long term brim to brim figures. E-Class diesel was amongst the best at getting close to the manufacturer's figures. Toyota Prius was the worst (41mpg vs 65mpg claimed). Good article.

Bye!
John

I think there must be a bit of a knack in getting the best fuel consumption out of our 07 A170 petrol with vario transmission . At least if you want to get near the MB figure of 42mpg combined. Doing similar journeys with the same driving manner I get very diverse computer results. There is not a lot of variation a driver can do! mild acceleration up to cruising 60 the Vario holds the engine speed at 1800 rpm in C and 2100 in S. What I have noticed is the car will run on remarkably freely. Take you foot of the throttle pedel and the car does not slow much at all but will chunter on unconstrained (presumably using no fuel) only slowing very gradually. I guess the philosophy has to be look at the traffic ahead up to the horizon, from 60 take your foot of the pedal about 1/2 mile from the roundabout and by the time you get there you will down to 30. You should then get the best fuel consumption out of the car but at the risk of getting A class drivers a bad name.

For years every time that i have filled up I have reset to see how far each tank goes.

I have stopped doing it now, I do not car anymore, makes life so peaceful :-D

Totally agree with this sentiment Malcolm, I'm just getting over my first and hopefully last heart attack and awaiting by-pass surgery, it's amazing how trivial many things seem now. I can't drive my Merc for another week yet and I'm out on a mountain bike every day trying to get as fit as I can before the operation, fuel cosumption on the bike is excellent. All joking aside enjoy the driving while you can and don't get too overworried about you MPG ;)

All best wishes with your operation. Hope you'll soon be fighting fit again. Keep us posted.

Ultymate - all the best re the op. Take it easy and come back stronger.

My interest in my MPG is just that, interest. If one worries about fuel consumption, get a pushbike :)

But there is worth in monitoring mpg, to keep an eye on the "health" of one's engine.

Thanks for the good wishes guys, as for the MPG I find it's usually directly proportional to the amount of lead in the right foot

Set a new record the other day on a run up north.

Steady 75-80 mph - computer readout was 42.1 mpg (5.59 l/100 km) over 900 odd miles.

Not bad considering all that power.

Did, however require a full bottle of oil just as I arrived back home. First top-up since delivery.

Doesn't matter how I drive, I never get more than about 420 miles before I need to fill up.

Yes and to be fair many people find the fuel costs nowadays are a significant part of the family budget. Makes perfect sense to keep an eye on consumption. A retired couple near me now only use their car twice a week. That is all they can afford. Very easy to forget that the average pensioner couple live on a combined income of about £10,000 per year and that 60% of pensioners are too poor to pay income tax.
