A few years ago I had a steering rack replaced. At the time I queried the cost of wheel alignment with Mercedes. They said the £300+ cost was due to it being a four wheel alignment on a laser jig for 6 hours and was the only way it could be done.

ATS prior to that put four new tyres on it and did a £28 wheel alignment but they wore unevenly very quickly on the front.

So, do I really need to get it done all four wheels and on a laser jig or will a standard 2 wheel £30 job at a tyre place do the trick? I struggle to think that such a routine task as wheel alignment can be designed for such expense, but then again....

As we speak only the front are wearing unevenly by the way.

I had 4 wheel laser, or whatever they call it, alignment done at large tyre centre about nine months ago - 40 sterling all in - and the tyres are wearing perfectly. You could buy a good 124 for what they were quoting you!!

I am due to get four new tyres on my ML within next few days and will have it aligned as the current tyres are not wearing evenly - will let you know what the additional cost is.

Regards

Bill

Bit of a trek from Manchester however, unless the OP is really keen

Good news. Must be a demand for it, after all.

Ok - got four new tyres fitted today.
Just for those that may be interested I fitted 255/65/17 - I had 235/65/17 on it. I need all the ground clearance I can get.

I couldn't get my car aligned as we discovered that both front track rod ends need replacing first of all - quite a bit of play which funnily was not evident whilst driving.
The cost of the alignment would have been an extra £40 sterling - £45 if not buying tyres.

My four tyres, Hankook's, balanced and including a very good hand car wash cost me €500 + VAT. I paid in Euro's (approx £400 sterling )
