Advice on size of bolts please.
Have just bought a set of 81/2JX17H2 ET35 rims from a 2003 SL500 to replace my R129 SL500 (1999) 81/4JX17H2 ET34 rims and the existing bolts are about 12 to 15mm too long. The collar of the new bolts would appear to need to be closer to the start of the thread. Does anyone know the correct ones to use please?

Are you sure the bolts are the correct shape? They are usually a 60 degree taper or a curved radius shape and should sit snugly in the alloy wheel.

As regards the length, I would just cut them to the correct size. Get your original wheels and bolts and measure how much thread pokes through the holes. Then cut the new bolts so that the same length is showing through the new alloys. Take special care that they are the right length on the rear wheels as you can foul the handbrake.

Check out my post at this thread: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=38419
They sell different shapes and lengths of bolts if you dont want to get the angle grinder out!! ;)

I noticed that Malcolm f iitted something similar few years back so I'm hoping he can help.

Thanks for your input Darren

I did a trawl through past posts and noticed Malcolm referred to the bolts he used when converting his own R129 (not as pretty as my lady!) - M12x1.5 17mm Hex but with 14mm radius seat instead of 12mm. Alloywheelsdirect sell these at £40 for 20. Should be here to-morrow so will post a note to see if they work. The 8.5X17 et35's came with 255 tyres, think I will fit 245's to reduce any sidewall bulge as the difference in wheels reduces the inner clearance by 4mm.

Yes the bolts that you have coming are fine and will do the job. Those that try and get away with the original bolts are asking for trouble

2003 SL wheels use 245 tyres as standard
