wheels rubbing

Hi just checking for a chap at work he has a ce 220 same as me he is changing his wheels from 15" to 18" & he is putting 225 x 45 x 18 tyers on them well i think that he has to use 225 x 40 x 18 or he will get rubbing of the tyers on the wing but not on the back im i correct or just full of s**T looking at my car with the 225 x 40 x 18 on gap about 1/2" only his car is all standed srings can you help my car was sent to MB for fitting 18 wheels

It depends on what was on in the first place. At the end of the day, the overall diameter, and therefore gap between the wheel and arch should be unchanged irrespective of the wheel size or the speedo and will be out of whack.
Bolid has a conversion thing on his site, though I can't remember the url. I found this though

which does basically the same thing
Roughly, the profile drops one notch per size increase and if I read the chart right, on 18'' he needs to be looking at 35 profile (and an account with his nearest back specialist wouldn't be a bad idea!) though this does depend on the width.

In many ways it's the shape of the tyre shoulder that determines whether a tyre will rub or not. High profiles generally have a rounded shoulder and lower profiles have a less rounded shoulder that is more likely to rub. Some low profiles are worse in this respect than others
