Husband has recently ourchased new E class 320cdi avant-gard which has standard alloy wheels for that model. The size is 16" with 225/55 but would like to change to 17" 245/45 tyres which are 5-twin spoke design option number 674. Is this able to be done without having the sports suspension option number 486? Can you advise what is best for his car and model as he would like to upgrade the alloys including the tyre width.
Thanks
Helen

Hi & Welcome,

The attached link details all the MB wheel and tyre options http://www.murray-systems.com/mercedes_wheel_fitments.pdf

Just scroll down to the E Class W/S211 section

You can also check the rolling diameter differences on this site
http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

The Avantgarde has a lowered susspension as standard, I do not think you would require the sports susspension as well. The MB differing wheels maintain the standard rolling diameter so you should not have a problem.

Since the car is new why not see if you can do a deal with MB for a change. Also wWhy did you not request the 17" wheels originally?

I have the twin spoke 17'' alloys and agree they look a lot better than the standard ones (it also corners a lot better too!). I've just checked the old Russian Vin decoder and mine does have the 486 option so I can't say whether this is absolutely required.

However, as Blocat says, its already lowered so should look ok and the diameter is fine too so no adjustment there. It may be that the 486 provides better geometry for that width of tyre as I doubt MB specifiy it just to be awquard, but plenty of people put 245/17'' on standard cars so I suspect the worst you will find is slightly uneven tyre wear, perhaps wearing the outside edge more heavily than the inside and easily rectified by rotation.

Do not forget that the off set is very important, as you have ESP and you must not deviate too far from the MB set up.

Be aware the 17" wheels will make the ride much more harsh than with 16" wheels. They look good but suggest you try them out first.
