Hi, I'm a new owner/forum member, so apologies if this is a common question that comes up from new members, but I was wondering how I could find out what my Merc would have cost when it was new back in 1983?
She's a 1983 230TE Auto Estate (very lovely too)

Hard to tell exactly what it would have cost because of optional extras etc, but you might get a good idea of price from parkers or any other price guide.
that shows an as new price

Your car cost £12753 in Oct 1983 By 1984 the price had risen to £13798. Car Tax accounted for almost £1000 of that in addition to the VAT of 15%

17.5 vat to be precise in the UK, so what it really worth, 2.5k to drive it out of the showroom with fancy new plates on, 50% after 3 years or more, then 75% up to 15 years old ( then it gains value because its a classic then when its 25 years old its vintage and thats the only time you will recuperate losses, so an easy answer is buy old to start with as i do

Sorry, but in 1983 VAT was only 15%.

From 1/4/73 it was 10%.
From 29/7/74 it was 8%
From 18/7/79 it was 15%.

Car Tax was 10%, and VAT was levied on the sum of the net cost price plus Car Tax.
