Ålesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum. There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout.

A worthy attempt.

The then German Kaiser Willhelm II sent troops and materials to rebuild the town and protect the inhabitants as winter set in just three days after the fire.

The recent musical talent wot the yoof do adore, Sigrid is from Alesund.

The picture I took is from the fort at Aksla that was part of the fortifications put in place by the Germans during their occupation in WWII

I enjoy learning as I travel. Had not given any thought to Norway until our favourite boat was taking her summer holidays in 2017.
