just been on a trek in wharfdale yorkshire, freezing fog and nearly dark and saw lots of young women, on the school run i immagine, in dark coloured cars, which were almost invisible comming towards you.

they must see the majority of other motorists with their headlights on but seem to be on a mental conveyer belt, and can only think of the schools location, and little johny comming out to be placed in the kept warm car for his journey home, again with no lights on.

somone trying to overtake from the opposite direction would not see her, somone trying to cross the road or pull out onto the road, would not see her. ?

i am not saying they were all women, just about 90%.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO EDUCATE THESE PEOPLE. ? herbiemercman.

I drove from London to Glasgow last week, about 100 miles of which was thick fog. Amazed at how many cars had no lights on at all, some at 85mph, and how many still had rear fog lights on 100 miles after leaving the fog.

I see it all the time ..... obviously think that because they can see where they're going, they can be seen.
Also, those that drive on just side lights ...... Why? I thought that the dim/dip system of the late 80s/early 90s was a good idea, but for ever reason seemed to be very short lived.

it happens an AWFUL lot. often around here they are light coloured cars (silver/white) so blend into the fog nicely!
perhaps this is the reason cars are now being fitted with DRL's, to save these idiots from themselves?

as far as dim-dip etc is concerned, given the fact that all cars have parking lights on them, i really dont see the point in having sidelights at all. why not just have lights on or off, then high and low beam? it would make sense surely!

Is it correct that on newer cars the dash/instrument panel is permanently lit? If so,a false indication to some drivers that their lights are also on,perhaps.

Totally agree with TurboPete, but what's more shocking is the number of Police cars running around with not lights on or just "side lights" after the official time of sunset, or bad weather.

I haven't looked at the highway code for a while, but surely it is in there, it always used to be - during inclement weather or sunset (official lighting up time for vehicles) dipped headlights should always be used.

See and be seen is my moto, but don't know how to convince these irresponsible drivers

i drove an Iveco van recently......it does not have sidelights as an option on the switch. Dip beam or nothing.
Seems that without them the side lights are brighter (like the old Volvo's) when dip is selected they dim down.
Good Bad??? dunno......but suppose something has got to be better than nothing,

Absolutely agree with everyone,it seems that re education on lighting is in order, 80 pc of drivers have no idea how and when to used the lights, ie fog lamp on when it should not, not on when it should, same with rear fog lamps, and I get so annoy when people don't indicate.

She was probably form the "lights will waste my battery brigade" - learnt how to drive back in the days of dynamo's!

This...the only time i have driven without lights is my mother's yaris (digital display gets dimmer when lights go on so no way of telling other than to look at switch!). Nobody flashed either, only noticed after 3 incidents where people pulled out in front of me for no reason.

On an older car you can't see the instrument panel one bit in the dark without lights so it would be impossible to go 10 feet without the lights on (i know some people still do but i genuinely don't know how!).

On a recent trip my wife and I started to count the number of cars with one head light out, it worked out at about 1 in 10 on a particular stretch of road, don't the police bother any longer?

"WHERE ARE THE "NO HEADLIGHTS " PEOPLE FROM ?"

They all come from Venus.

It's a well-known fact that all Venusians have X-Ray vision, so no need for lights. ;)

Mrs Tode doesn't like me driving on Nightvision -- I can hear her knuckles turning white. :D
