I know that I have been in the Hi Fi trade all my life, along with electronics, but I only fix them and never listen to them.

I hate the current radio stations and the music that they play. Now that I am going over to "smart cards" and MP3 where do you get the music source from.

Thanks

Hi Malcolm,
I tend to stick to i-tunes for all my digital music as it is at least legal.
Much is said about these other sites such as Limewire etc but i am not sure that one day a huge bill will not drop through my door for copyright of all the songs i have downloaded. The whole thing seems a bit up in the air at the moment, but i am sure it will be sorted out and BIG bills will be sent out.
i Tunes won't do for the Beatles if you want any of that you will need to buy the disc or LP.
Actually buying the disc or LP is my favourite way of getting music, as i am old fashioned and like to hold the thing that i buy in my hand.
It's not quite the same to me to just download it.:D:D:D

I am not keen on the new stuff either, but have to put up with it at work all night anyway.
Amongst my own personal favourites are Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Al Stewart, BBC Test Card music and i quite like music from films too such as self preservation society etc.

Hi Malcolm,

I would thoroughly recommend www.lastFM.com

Great if you are also into a particularly style of music, as an 'artist radio' function allows you to discover musically/related artists.....then download the tracks you like, or save them to your library once you sign up.
I've become addicted to it, and discovered music I wouldn't have otherwise know existed

hope this helps

Is that in Lime regis or a download site :D;)

Try this one Malcolm - http://www.spotify.com/en/about/what/ here you can listen to the stuff before you purchase and its legal.

I might add my daughter put me on to this given that I am still listening to Little Richard, Big Bopper, Lonnie Donegan, Pat Boone but I given up on the Ink Spots:lol::lol:

Amazon are pretty good with their download service, iTunes have improved since they removed DRM from their library but the whole authorising machines and devices annoys me.

I use this Russian (i believe) site. http://www.mp3fiesta.com/

I've downloaded dozens if not hundreds of my favourite tracks, still got most of my initial payment of 50 dollars in credit....takes a bit of searching and many of my favourites were on compilation albums.

Probably not a lot of use if your taste is classical mind..

I'm old school so buy the CD. Still got the LP's from 60's-90's which can be played on my old 20 year old Sony hi-fi.

I will then upload them to my 500Gb hard drive and play on laptop/car stereo.

Just got 30th Anniversary "Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds" from Asda for about £8 and earlier in the year ACDC Back in Black for £5 - most shops still want full price for this gem.

A lot of my music is kinda specialist and I rue the day I left Loughborough as I could get anything in Nottingham. I don't do itunes/spotify/limewire/etc as I want the CD not a download that you can lose.

Limewire is a good source of music downloads (illegal BTW) but will quickly infect your PC with spyware. I found running SpyBot and AdAware after a session it picked up all manner of intrusions. If you regularly use it, I would expect a letter sometime from your ISP informing you it is illegal to use these torrents for unpaid downloads.

The best way overall might be to buy CDs and rip (encode) them via iTunes using the Apple Lossless encoder. The resulting audio quality is extremely good. MP3s, by comparison, are poor or extremely poor

If you're not using an iPod use FLAC, or a high bit-rate MP3 encoder, to maximise the quality of the files you create

Don't fall into the old trap of "I won't be able to tell the difference so why bother?" - with a little care everyone can hear the difference between MP3 and LossLess / high bit-rate encoding

The encoder & file types supported varies with different players so choose your setup with care. iTunes / iPod is an easy solution and not a bad one. It doesn't tie you to music bought from the Apple iTunes Store - you can download any (supported) file format into iTunes and onto the iPod

Without getting into the honesty vs piracy debate....

Make sure your ISP hasn't signed up for Phorm before using something like limewire that isn't in the slightest bit anonymous..
