I think merc only hide them

in 3 places on the C class. Low down in front, LHS as you look at the car from the front into the engine bay, reached from underneath. RHS, at the back, high up, near the bulkhead, reached from the top, and I think there might be some that are RHS, half-way along. All dependent on which model you have.
The bulkhead one doesn't help by the filter housing being black ABS plastic.

Your car will be fitted with a catridge type filter,,it should be located at the nearside rear of the engine...

My sheet says it's on the front right of the engine! (as you look under the bonnet).
The filter is of the replaceable paper element type and is removed using a special 'cap' socket (76 mm 14-flute cap socket) available from 'Hellfords', most motor factors and of course MB Stealerships or even E-Bay, not too expensive. Simply change the paper element. Tighten to 25 Nm.
Cheers, Tom.

Put up a picture of your engine bay and somebody will put an arrow on it.

LHD...nearside...it's confusing!
