The electric atf fluid can be used in both 722.6 and 722.5, mercs only generaly supply the later type oil if you by it from them.

722.9 is a different oil and that alone must only be used.

Hi thanks for the quick reply Blackc55 yes i have the ws switch by the gear stick. does that mean it uses the fully synthetic oil ? Only the garage that has changed the oil for me today have put atf in i have been back to see them because they told me they only replaced what came out 3.3 ltrs so they havn't drained the torque converter so they told me to bring the car back on friday and they will drain it. My concern is have they also put the wrong oil in.

Most 722.6 boxes dont have drain plugs in the torque converter, so they may have a job on there hands.

The drain plug was dropped in 1998-9 so there is a good chance that yours has the drain plug, the only snag now is that the old fluid is now mixed up with the new, so that cant be done without a complete change again

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=25558

the link shows how much fluid comes out and goes in, also the type

Dont let it upset you. I have heard it said the it can be pumped through the cooler, but this is not necessary. Most it gets changed from the box itself, we are all in the same boat and after 99 no one can change it, by doing the change every 40k miles you have nothing to worry about

Hi Malcom i went back to the garage today to see what oil they did put into the gearbox. I have come away happier as they have used a compatible oil. I took with me a printed copy of the oil change with pictures that Parrot of Doom had posted they say that they didn't realise that you could drain the torque converter. So there having the car back in and will drain the sump and the torque converter and replace with new oil. thanks to everyone for their help regards Bob.
