If I am forced to go the plan "B" route and need to change my 2001 W203 C180 petrol Auto, what do you think I should look for under 10K maximum? I am told to look for 2004 C220 CDI by the guy who sold me my existing car. I do under 5K/year local driving and it has to be auto. Thanks

Under 5k per year, get a petrol. I'd go for a C240/320 and enjoy the silky V6. They probably can't give them away these days (whereas C220cdis are still sought after and command a premium) so for the same money, you should get a newer, low mileage, high spec model and at that mileage the poor mpg really doesn't matter. After all, assuming its town driving, a C220cdi isn't that much better anyway, so why pay the premium?

As for the others. The larger engine will probably give you a better spec of car and at a more reasonable price.

This one from autotrader today is probably typical - OK this is a private sale, but they are available through the trade too.

Best to have a car 2004 onwards as they are galvanized (won't rust) and have nano paint (car wash proof, more robust).

£10,000 will buy you a nice car. Check the service history is complete, but otherwise, mileage is not an issue.

Go for a C-class from Sept 04 onwards - that'll be the revised model. You'll notice the interior is much nicer than your current one.
