Hi. Not really sure which section this goes under as I cannot post on DIY. Anyway I am thinking of putting a car lift on a part of my lawn, if this is feasible, to service my cars etc. Can anyone tell me how deep a concrete base I would need and which is the best type? Or is it just personal preference? 2 post? 4 post? scissor? Any advise would be much appreciated?

Depends what you want to use it for... four post are more stable and won’t require quite the same strengthening as the support for a two post.

You can get small scissor ones you can use in your garage, don’t have the same vertical lifting but still useful for a lot of jobs

Hi thank you. I just wanted it for servicing, Exhaust, brakes etc. You couldn't get a motorbike in my garage lol. Portable maybe as not using much.

Id recommend the on floor mounted mid rise scissor lift John as it has a small footprint, rises to around the 1 metre mark, wouldn't require a concrete base depth of more than 4" with a bit of mesh for added safety. Some mobile scissor lifts because of their design restrict working access under the floor of the car for exhausts etc. I had one of these as my starter lift so I know the problems.
https://www.googleadservices.com/pa...863glpDwAhWK3KQKHUaIALsQ9aACegUIARCMAQ&adurl= Something like this might be close to what you require as you can store it away in the garage to keep the elements from it. only downsize is you will need a concrete runway from the garage to the point you want to use it in the garden?

Two posters for me, I have a small scissor lift at home and have worked on 4 posters, I find the scissor and 4 posters restrictive in carrying out many jobs.

Would agree with you there. My problem is the height of the existing roof...its sloped from a height of 4.5 mtrs back to 4 mtrs, so I'm caught that way.

I was put on to AUTOMECH SERVICES when I was after a lift for my garage and ended up with THIS ONE. It does need bolting to the floor though so may not be what you're after. However, they also do a PORTABLE MODEL which may suit your needs?

I agree that a two poster would give the best access though this would have been impossible for me due to it having to fit in a width and height restricted garage. I still have access to front and rear suspension though, and there are no restricting central ladder bars on my scissor lift so an exhaust is certainly possible and has since been proved on several occasions.

Most 2 post lifts are less than 4 metres high.

I think that a mobile scissor may be more relevant to the use it will get. I have an E Class Estate. I take it that it will be strong enough for the job?

My scissor lift at home is ment to be portable but it has to be on a very smoothe floor, even with this concrete floor I struggled. Here’s a pic at my old house with the Mrs’s old SL. It coped easily with weight. D784F832-C68E-46A8-A3EC-351AAEB77C0A.jpeg

I have a two post now as well, cant beat the accessibility to underside of car from it. You just have to careful positioning the legs under the vehicle as regards to support and balance everytime for safety's sake. The scissor would be more safer and speedier to mount the car on.
This was my old mobile floor lift. it served me well but was awkward for underfloor work .My current 2 post lift I bought second Hand from a friend and a freshen up of paint.

Thats a fine strong floor lift. A lot of them look very flimsy. But the 2 post lift is the kiddo. Meets all work needs, underneath work and wheel free. You just have to be careful when placing the legs. How deep is the concrete floor?

About 6" Jim but with that type of lift with the under frame id be confident with 4". A lot of newer stuff is free standing columns which i dont like the look of to be honest. Would want at least 6" reinforced 40 newton concrete if I was putting one up

Two post all day long for me because I often take body shells of Range rover sports and discos, the access is fantastic but the base MUST be very very strong to take the high tensile bolts you need to fit
