I am going to buy a code scanner and was thinking about this one "iCarsoft CR V2.0 - Professional Diagnostic" from LJM Car Diagnostics for £143. There do cheaper versions that are only for "Mercs, Smart and Sprinters" (I thought Sprinters were Mercs?) but this code reader has the option of choosing and adding 10 makes of cars. As well as my Vito van I also have a Honda Jazz and who knows what car I will get in the future so this seemed like a good option . Any advice or recommendations please.

I ummed and aahed about this for a while when I needed to reset the SRS warning. I was leaning toward the CR version, but managed to snag a used MB 2 from the bay of E for £80

Apart from the initial purchase cost is there a disadvantage to getting the CR version instead of the version that is focused on Mercedes?

As long as it does what you want, no.
ICarsoft are pretty good and just make sure you buy from an official reseller as there are fakes around.

I own a MB and BMW so opted for one of these from this seller (see link), diagnoses most makes.
I particularly wanted the ability to register a new battery to the BMW and read codes on both cars.
As said use an official iCarsoft outlet like the one in the link too many non genuine copies out there to take a chance

I'm not sure but does the CR do all modules or a subset?

For a cheap keep in the car diag I use an Autel AP200. It's a single that connects to your phone and has so far worked on every MB passenger car I've tried it on (doesn't work on cans or van based people carriers using the base MB software). It can updated to read other brands for £20;,per brand per year.

Some if the live data is a bit awkward to use but as a basic read and clear device it's good and cheaper than icarsoft.

Just to resurrect this thread - does the autel AP200 do all the 'bits' and cover cars from say 2007 - 2018?
Two MBs in the family now, so I was thinking of getting one - I've got one for my other non MB car and I actually quite like it, as long as it can talk to all of the MB bits?
