I have a E-230, which although is only a 4 cylinder I find it's more than enough for everyday driving.
At 3000rpm it is cruising at around 80mph.
It averages 28mpg, and takes me and my family everywhere in great comfort.
I feel the car has great pressence on the road and will look modern for a number of years yet.
I dont believe there is much diffrence in fuel cost's between a 2.3 and 2.4 (V6) so if you like the smaller petrol engines then I would go for the 2.4 and the little bit extra power.
I have an E240 Avantgarde and it is quite wonderful. The silence inside the cabin at quite ridiculous speeds is wonderful, and it is so comfy. It's been as reliable as a Swiss watch, and has constantly returned nothing less than 27mpg.
Two downsides so far in a years trouble free motoring: the gearbox takes an eternity to kick down a gear or two; not good if you've just pulled out to overtake - I move the shift now, and main dealer servicing prices are quite expensive.
Otherwise, the best thing I did was surrender my company car.
I have an E430 and it's excellent. Very good performance, I get around 26 MPG although Mrs Pat gets 30 MPG which is impressive for a V8 I think. I also drive a Smartcar to help pay the bills!
Thanks to guy, paul, greg and patster, I currently drive a diesel would ideally like another but feel if I have a merc I want the driving experience to match the rest of the car, but will I miss the low down torque of a diesel?, trying to find a diesel with the spec of a petrol is very difficult and the price difference is quite large, E240's seem quite hard to find is this because they offer the combination of performance and economy, thanks for the input, I'll keep looking!!!. John.
