Hi everybody!
Hopefully somebody can give me some good ideas what to do here; I'm purchasing a car and parented by a mechanic a Mercedes is the only option. Things narrowed to a diesel E class 2009. to 2014. I have literally seen every single one of the E classes in a 0 to 6500 pounds price pool on Autotrader.
The E350 seems a bit thirsty and pricy tax wise. On the other hand the 4 cylinder ones seem like a good option.
Does anybody know what are potential issues and where to pay the attention?

Hello and welcome,

Well represented on the forum is the W212 E-Class - however forum's are mainly populated with members who have problems with their cars so the view you get could (and usually does...) puts people off :(

E220CDI - decent car, not a bad engine in the W212 and not much to go wrong - ensure the ATF has been changed regularly and you won't go far wrong.

Have had 2 x 212’s and loved both of them (despite the saga on the first)
Well equipped, solid cars
The OM651 4 cylinder Diesel engine gets bad press (as BC says you mostly hear of issues not praise on a forum), but maintained properly it’s decent and there are thousands upon thousands of satisfied users (just visit Hamburg and try to take a taxi which isn’t one)

Have a good look at the options of the 4 and 6 cylinders and try to get the true m p g difference etc , I went from a v6 to a 4 and although a lovely car I did not get to love the 4 as I did the v6. But if it’s down to a fine line on the running cost the 4 must be the one but just try to buy a good genuine, low as mls as possible with best service history you can. to be patient and buy the right one will definitely pay off in the long run.

If you go for the 4 cylinder engine make sure it has had regular oil changes even better if done before due, the timing chains can be a problem if servicing is neglected. The V6 is good for 200k miles and very reliable again servicing is important avoid neglected cars. The 212 pre-facelift are very well made cars I’m sure you won’t be disappointed my preference is the V6 and I’m averaging 33mpg with mine, the 4 cylinder will give an average of 38 I would have thought
