Firstly may i say what a great forum you have here and it looks like ill be reading for a few weeks !!

Now,

I have just purchased my first Mercedes c220 cdi avantgarde se (2004) pre facelift model.

Blooming fantastic car, after going from a freelander to this was like going from a skoda to a ummm Merc ! lol

The only problem (if it is a problem), Is when i start her in the morning and start to drive out of the village, It seems the car doesnt know what gear it should be in.

It constantly changes up and down the gears (im averaging 20mph at this point). then when i brake, it jumps hard down the gears.

I must stress this only happens when the car is cold in the mornings, but when she is upto running temp she is fine.

Should i worry or is this normal?

many thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Your car is normal, it is designed to hold onto the lower gears to warm up the CAT as soon as possible, namely it will hold 2 and often lock up.

Quite normal

T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.
TV, Agree will hold onto the gears longer to warm up more quickly, but is it right it 'jumps' (can't remember the quote sorry) back down ??

My T210 E320 will hold the gears longer , but when I stop - first stop is after 60 secs so still cold - it doesn't jolt or anything.

How many miles ? Could it be due a transmission change ?

hello folks,

It has 89,000 miles but has been serviced every 6 months by MB dealership since new.

when travelling on main road for 400 yards, then brake to turn, it goes down the geard "hard", i mean you can feel the car thud with every gear drop.

as for holding the gears, mine does not hold the gears, it constently goes up and down the gears,

example.

1-2-3-4-3-4-3-2-3-4-3-2-3-2-3-4- etc etc. never holds onto any gear.

As your gearbox fluid has never been changed you should have this done as everyone reports back with a much smoother box

Do change the fluid an filter

Holding a gear from a cold start is one thing but 'jumping' and 'hard' downshifts suggests to me a faulty maf........Also, have the gearbox oil level checked.
