270clk
Hi I need some input /advice
For the last 4 years I have owned a late 2005 270 clk which is about to top 180k, it has been relatively trouble free and first car we have kept this long and still love it. Now needs manifold flap repair, wheel arches blistering and bonnet lacquer has crazed . Still runs well though .
In the new year thinking of changing it for either same model but lower mileage ,have seen some with less than 70k 1 owner or slightly newer 220 clk . Budget is about 4k
We like the body shape so want to stick with CLK, but any advantage in going for 220 over 270 . Any input would be helpful.

Only thing I can think in favor of 4cyl, is better fuel economy. But it dpends on you do you want make trade off for clearly lower acceleration/torq

They're both great engines, just need to keep an ear out for leaky injector seals/ remove the engine cover on any potential purchase.

I bought an 07 CLK220 CDI almost 2 years ago with 50k miles. This replaced a petrol C280 W202. Initially l felt the 220 was a little underpowered. However, the more I've used it the more l've come to appreciate its very good economy and as long as you're prepared to press the accelerator pedal fairly firmly, it accelerates fairly well. I've just returned from a break in Wales and the car performance up steep hills and during motorway cruising is good enough l feel.
Hope this helps.

I had a 2003 CLK270 a great car it had 115K miles on the clock when I sold it almost no problems.
I think I bought it in 2006 having first test driven a 220, there was a lot more go in the 270.

I do 45 miles a day for work and currently get about 45 mpg summer 42 mpg winter .took on long run 220 miles and got 58mpg .This was being restricted to 50 mph on M27 for 30 miles each way . Usually get high 40s on sensible run at fairly quick pace. Think I am sold on a revisit to 270 clk with lower milage . No DPF and fairly quick. 320 cdi also on radar anything I should look out for ?? .Thanks for input guys its first MB and now hooked . Bought wife a very pretty full loaded Astra twintop , she said its lovely but it's not the Merc lol . So maybe 2 Mercs on cards ??

Wife has a minter of a 2007 CLK 220 CDi auto. Mileage now 140k and it feels like it would do another 100k so I'd not change yours just because of the mileage... if it's going rusty at all then a different matter.

Wife does 10ml work commute and her weekday mpg is rarely above 30... on a run nearer 40. I know it's not a popular opinion on here but if we had another 220 we'd prefer manual transmission. However earlier this year I bought a Viano with the 3.0 CDi and auto. Many times we've laughed she has the van engine and I've the engine that would suit a CLK far better. So if we looked to buy again we'd bias our search to the 3.0 diesel... the 220 is totally fine but that 3.0 would make it special.

Pics for interest...

Those photos from Groverunner remind me what a good looking car that CLK was. Mine, bought in 2009 was a 220 in tenorite grey, nappa leather interior, and I loved it. After 3 years I replaced it with a C250 coupé, a better car all round, but I never really liked the looks as much as my CLK, my car-mad IT expert came to the house to fix something though and thought the new one was great, "Looks terrific, really aggressive!" he said, and maybe that was my problem with it. The car was a bit troublesome, fuel injection, cylinder head and wheel sensor problems, though all dealt with by MB under warranty, but I didn't want to keep it once the three years was up, who knew what lurked around for future years? A new E250 replaced it, an excellent car, but it never really grabbed me, so that only lasted one year, to be replaced by an absolute gem of an Alfa Giulia, which at 3 years old was replaced by my current petrol C300, which after the first low mileage year, I'm very happy with. Everything about my C300 just feels 'right', which is exactly how I felt about my fondly remembered CLK, but oh, that Alfa....

A few years back I had this Alfa 156 with the 2.4 5cyl diesel. What a car... what an engine. Everything was perfectly balanced and such a fast car across rural A & B roads. Loved it.

This was my first Alfa, a 159SW bought in 2008, posing beside an Italian lake next to a Brera 'friend'. A lovely thing, never had a problem apart from an incompetent dealer, who turned out to be a bunch of crooks, but there was no alternative within 100 miles, so it was replaced by the CLK, very different but also good in its way.

And here's another one, my gorgeous Giulia, pictured the day I collected it from a rather better dealer, but although modern Alfas are wonderful, the dealers are the pits, an utter disgrace, and apparently that's the case almost nationwide. The people who sold me this one were pretty good, but the Alfa franchise was moved to another place in the same group, and everything went downhill. Then the group was taken over, Westover to Hendy, and after the most expensive and most incompetent service I've ever had, oil under-filled by one and a half litres, the warning message came on as I drove the car away, I swore never again, replacing it a few months later with my current C300. I sold the Giulia to an independent dealer who paid cash, he gave me about 50% of what I'd paid originally, which is pretty phenomenal for a three year old car, this was16 months ago before today's used car price insanity. It had held its value as well as any Mercedes would have done, and in the time I had it, not a single fault or problem.

Sorry about the temporary change to an Alfa forum guys, but normal service will be resumed very soon.

I kknow my "experience" refers to the W/S203 rather than the CLK, but when I was researching the 203 before purchase I found original road tests from when the 203 first came out, all said the C270 was the better/best engine and the 220 was under-powered. I did not drive a 220 and bought a 2001 S203 C270 Elegance - my first ever MB - and really liked it, especially the acceleration when required. Got over 50mpg on a spirited run back from Somerset to Kent, 45mpg in normal mainly localish use. Only swopped to the S204 because the interior is nicer and I saw a deal too good to refuse - in March 2012, she's still on our driveway as our main car.
