Hi all,

I am interested in buying an SLK for my wife. Durability and fun are more important than price (within reason of course)

Any thoughts on which year/model I should look at?

Thanks!

You obviously have the M271 petrol engine cam chain considerations . What length commute does she do as far as Diesel engines as a possibility ?

Interesting question...

Depends on how much you have to spend as per above. Go for a later R171 with the M272 engine (V6 3 or 3.5ltr) then you don't get the simplex chain issues you get with the M271 (SLK200). Also if post 2008 then VED is reduced as they dropped the emissions on the V6 :)

The V6 3ltr SLK280 is nicer than the SLK350 because it comes on 16" wheels, the SLK350 is very uncomfortable in comparison having tried both.

Also get one with heated seats and airscarf - great time of year to buy one as prices are lower when the suns not shining :)

What about the SLK diesels with that annual mileage as well , I wouldn't rule them out

Diesels not an option until r172.
My choice would be a V6. Smoother, reliable, more refined and not too bad on fuel.

I've covered over 12K in 7 months in my V6 - looking like 20-21K for the year which is significantly more than I expected but it's very very nice to drive (@Wighty you should try driving yours instead of washing it away :p:D:p:D).

MPG wise I've averaged 31.69 (.69 makes all the difference :p) and 17ppm for fuel which I'm very happy with.

With the Slk search and a 10-15k price bracket , there are some nice diesels starting at 10k for 2012 models . As its the op's wife that is commuting in it there are some big cost savings to be had . I don't know what a 2012 Slk 350 would start at but I doubt it's 10k for 2012 models

Then you have even more time to be driving around going nowhere:D. The country needs someone to clog up the roads during commuting times...

I’ve thought about getting one of those as well and doing the suspension upgrade that unclebenz did. The 6 pot AMG brakes that some have can be a little eye watering cost wise for big miles but a fun car.
