Which used CDI C-Class to buy?

A friend is looking for a MB C-Class CDI. His budget is £5k tops. Are there any models to avoid/opt for in particular? A high mileage car would be fine as long as there is good service history. I understand there are radiator issues (Valeo?) with the C270 CDI. Any other significant problems/pitfalls to avoid? He would be prepared to look at a petrol C-Class 180 if he could find a cheap-ish one, but diesel preferred.

The best second hand C class would be an E class !!!!!! Preferably a 1998 E 300 turbo diesel. Cheap and bombproof with a lovely smooth ride and a beatiful 6 cyl engine.
I have the estate version and it beats a C class anytime.
