...my father owns a 'D' registered 420 4-door saloon - can anyone tell me if there is a workshop manual (MB or Haynes) available out there?

Is it a 420SE/SEL W126? There is a CD version of the W126 manuals available in the US. Search for Mercedes W126 or Mercedes 126 on eBay.
