I have a March 2004 diesel E270 CDI automatic with 23K miles on the clock. After its last sevice (21K miles), during which the SBC was also reprogrammed, the vehicle has developed an irritating fault. There is a whirring/whining noise whenever the engine has warmed up to running temperature and is turning at 1400-1600 r.p.m., whether the car is in drive or park. This noise is quite distinct from the intermittent groan made by the SBC and is accompanied by vibration throughout the car, but felt particularly through the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal. When on the move it occurs whenever the engine passes through the 1400-1600 rev range (usually when changing gear). Under warranty my dealer has replaced the radiator, torque converter and gearbox (contamination of automatic transmission fluid with coolant due to a failure in the radiator) but the problem persists. Is this a known fault with this model/engine and if so, how do I get it fixed. Any ideas of what it might be - are ther specialists who might be able to track it down? Not impressive for a 16 month old car!

Had a similar problem with my 2003 (53) E270cdi. 1st dealer I took it to said there was nothing with the car, but I persisted and sent the care to another dealer who found the problem was due to worn suspension bushes (on a car which had done <10K miles).

The suspension bushes were replaced and the problem disappeared. Ask your dealer to check this.

Good luck.

I can understand why soft engine mounts might cause vibration, but why the accompanying whirring/whining noise?

Dunno.

Just guessing that if the noise is down to engine speed only (not dependant on road speed, transmission or anything) then the problem could be vibration at certain revs causing resonance in some other member which sounds like whirring/whining.

It wouldn't necessarily be soft engine mounts - could be overly hard or perished or cracked (assuming they're rubber) or just not quite aligned properly.

Could be nothing at all the matter with the engine mounts but they are pretty straight forward to check.

Thanks - seems that the dealer is happy to look into this.
