Hi

I have a 52 e320 that has a strange whirring noise that is most noticable at 30 and 60, when decellerating from 30 i can feel a slight deep vibration through the steering wheel.

I recently had a front spring replaced and asked the garage to take a look, they had the car up on the ramp and could hear the noise but strangely couldn't place it's origin. They have checked out the bearings and all suspension elements but can't say what is causing it.

To continue with this process i'll have to start paying for diagnostic time and while i don't mind doing that it would be great if i could narrow the search for them, hence my post today!

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Richard.

they had the car up on the ramp and could hear the noise but strangely couldn't place it's origin.

How did they hear the noise? Did they run in, in gear, with the wheels in the air? Or did they just manually turn a wheel or two and heard it?

If the wheels were being driven, then it's obviously not coming from the front wheels!!

On previous vehicles, I've had a similar vibration. Turned out to be a worn (out) universal joint on the propshaft..

they said they ran the car on a ramp which allowed the wheels to turn at speed
