good afternoon guys, my 2006 Sl350 seems to make a slight whirring noise at speed coming from behind me?

Maybe as I’ve recently got it I’m picking up on anything.. possible the cheap tyres! Only seems to happen after 40mph and it’s not loud I just know it’s there..

Sounds like it’s coming from behind me (right hand drive) it’s not loud enough to film and I’ve tested without the air con on etc I know the fans sometimes speed up with acceleration etc.

Any comments are welcomed! It’s in with my Indie for service end of the month I’m just curious if it’s an SL thing or cheap tyres etc...

How could I tell? I’m not a hands on car guy I just love driving them!
Tough to tell , it's a cheap quick check for a garage though .
Have you checked tyre pressures , tread depth , tyre make (Chinese ditch finders ?)

Haha never heard of the Make! Continental on the front.. I will ask them to check it.

Pressures are fine! It seems to be at higher speeds which worries me abit

What are the rear tyres. Certain tyres are known to be noisy when worn.
The Chinese Deathsliders I had on my 500SL were terrible and sounded like the rear wheel bearings were about to collapse.

Not familiar with the Goldway but if they are more than half worn it's a distinct possibility.
I do question using cheap Chinese tyres on a car like an SL (or any car given the tyres are important in making sure your scenic drive doesn't end up with you in the scenery).

They are pretty much brand new done around 1500 miles I think.. the car has done 5000 miles in 5 years I have only just got it 2 weeks ago.

I would never put cheap tyres on a car they are a safety feature aswell as a way to drive! I had an Audi RS5 last year always bought the best rates tyres.

Not sure what mileage your car is , but gearbox ATF and filter should ideally be changed every 40,000 miles . As you are going to an Indy soon

65000 on the car 2006 reg, all fluids changed 3000 miles ago but not sure about rear dif

I’m at my indie for a year part service engine oil etc on the 27th due to me being away with work.

The only other sources of whirring from the rear of the car are fuel pump and PSE pump (used for central locking). The PSE pump wouldn't increase in volume with speed (and shouldn't run all the time anyway). It's difficult to advise without hearing it.

It won't be ABC pulsation dampers as your car doesn't have ABC (unless specced as a very very expensive option).

You are home and dry on the ATF then . Rear diff is unlikely to have been changed , there is no schedule for it . If it was me and the cars a keeper I'd get it done .
If they check the diff oil level , they are 15 mins from changing it anyway ....it's a cheap job

No doesn’t have ABC, thankfully!

Can you explain why a fuel pump may be getting louder with acceleration? (I don’t mean the obvious more fuel) but road noise increases surely it would be drowned out.. this can only be heard if I have the Comand turned off etc.

Thanks for all the help !

Thanks wighty, would you recommend just getting it changed anyway? 13 years old 65k on the clock can’t do any harm can it.

It is only the more fuel that would make it louder but you should be able simulate scenario with a good blast in lower gears. I'd be surprised if it was.
My money would be on tyres.

Thanks LostKiwi I appreciate that! Two rear tyres and diff all isn’t all that expensive in the wider picture I suppose.

I do intend using it as a daily through the winter until my garage is sorted for next year so I want it fit as a fiddle.
