Hi all

Who does everyone use for gearbox rebuilds (722.6)?

Mine has high fill times for K2 and K3 which will eventually mean a rebuild.

Someone reputable around the south of London would be ideal!

Would Terry at Wayne Gates undertake a rebuild or are you looking specifically for a gearbox specialist?
Too far away in Harrow?

He would, he has a very good guy there. I don't want to impose on him but would probably drive it there and back. its a 2 hour drive on a bad day, that's the only issue.

I would be dropping the box to him, had to use up a whole ramp with my massive car whilst the box is rebuilt! :)

TBH I will probably go down this route when I start getting long 2-3 or 3-4 (its a bet as to which will go first) Santa pod this weekend so that will help I'm sure :)

I would hate to mess it up and have to drop the box for the 3rd time....
I can't see you making a mess of it, there are remarkably few moving parts and it's designed to be rebuilt, beautiful peace of work. If anything, the main problem for the diy'er is all the ATF that is going to spew everywhere, i drained mine whilst it was still on the car, the pro's don't bother but they have steel topped benches easy to mop up.

Once the valve body is out and the box split the rest basically falls apart, there are plenty of youtube clips showing you just how quick these boxes come apart. You'll also need a deep 30mm socket to undo the only retaining nut on the output shaft. But the job is nothing to be frightened of.

Change the sprag bearings while your in there.

What bits would need to be changed, apart from friction material?

Seals etc?

Just the sprag bearings, there are two, they are known to fail and they are buried deep into the box. But i didn't change any seals, there are no gaskets and little else to go wrong. The 722.6's main issues lie in the valve block which you can get at, as you know.
There is also a known issue with scoring in the ATF oil pump, but i checked mine and it was perfect, i'm not that sure it's that much of a worry. Certainly not so much a worry as wondering if your torque converter is on it's last legs, which is another box out job, arghhh!!!!.

The clip below breaks the box down to it's main components in just under 13 minutes, would have been quicker but he forgot a retaining clip 9 mins in.

That clip should lead onto part two if your interested.

Mersea Island is a lovely, strange, place to visit.

'Company Shack' sea food platters are really something quite special.
