During the cold weather my windscreen washers froze up. When I had the bonnet open I noticed that these had some wires running to them, presumably to heat them in cold weather.

I asked at the garage about this and they said that they kick in when the temperature drops below a certain temperature.

Anybody know the true workings of these things as I think they might come in handy sometime soon?

The nozzles heat up (not sure but may be on the same circuit as the wing mirror heater) so it doesn't freeze as on the end of the jet, A common misunderstanding of this is that this is to stop the screen wash water from freezing in the nozzle. I believe it's actually to stop the ice formed by rain, snow etc from blocking the jet from the outside. It's down to decent screenwash to protect the rest of the system.

The recent cold weather has revealed that my washer heaters don't work! Checking with a meter shows a circuit through the actual nozzle heaters, but I can't get power to them. The fuse is OK, so I assume it's down to the temperature control switch - can anybody tell me where it is located on a 1988 300D, please???
