Hi Folks,

I’ve started getting a whooshing under hard acceleration - I’m guessing it might be a split in the intercooler pipe, as I had the same problem not long after I bought the car (seven years ago). Can anyone recommend where I can source a decent quality replacement part, please?

No obvious splits yet, but I’ve not had the chance to remove it and inspect it properly yet. Not sure what else it could be, but I’d welcome any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Nik

Give MB Grangemouth a call, they do forum discount and you know you’ll get the right part

I used to have this, also check that the intake pipe to the air box is seated fully and not cracked, mine split just as the pipe connected and would woosh under hard acceleration,

Thank you, that’s good to know. I’ll check that too.

Still trying to get to the bottom of this one. It sounds like it’s coming from the front left of the engine, where the turbocharged air goes up into the inlet. I’ve previously replaced the rubber hose at the front of the engine, so that was my first though. I unclipped it at the top and couldn’t feel any splits, although the o-ring feels quite loose to me.

My search is on-going, so if anyone else has any ideas or similar experiences I’d love to hear from you!

Check if you have any pending codes logged. Usually if its a pipe split you will get a pending code for running too lean, To get a confirmed code you need to run the car about three times in the day to get the EML to kick in. The errors may id the bank and narrow down your search.

Yes, must get myself an OBD reader!
Weirdly, it doesn’t seem to massively compromise performance…yet!

Fundamentally if its running too lean it wont affect performance as the cars ECU will tell the fuel system to
compensate by for eg burning more fuel
or using more air.
If you do all your own maintenace then I would recommend a icarsoft. Now at MB version 3 and they will pay for for themselves fast if you intend on keeping the car/brand.

Good luck and keep us updated

Had another look at the car this evening, and found a split in the lower rubber hose that comes out of the intercooler. The area around it is quite wet, so that was a bit of a giveaway.

As I don’t have a replacement hose to hand I’ve temporarily stuck some rubber vulcanising solution from a bicycle puncture repair kit in the split, then added a patch over the top, then stuck on a big patch made from an inner tube. And added some duct tape for good measure! So a bit bodgy to say the least, but hopefully it might hold it, or at least stop it getting worse, until I can get a new hose.

Sounds like a suitable running repair that I would expect to be good for a few 10s of K miles.
The duct tape is a good move to hold it all together (I'm not joking).

In the meantime, I need to figure out where to get a replacement hose. Harder than you’d think, as I guess it’s a pretty old car now.

I am certain you can get the hose from MB.

I’m certain I can too. I’d just rather try and get one from a more cost-effective source, as I’d rather spend my pennies on my motorbikes :)

Get the Mercedes part number via 7zap using your VIN, then type the Mercedes part number into ebay, Google, and also specifically try Autodoc. They are about £20 for hoses vs about £50+ from the dealer for my E-class. In the end, I am trying sealing o-rings, as the hose itself looks in good condition.

Pretty sure I found the part on Autodoc, but could do with there being a microfiche diagram, just to be certain.

You could try the Mercedes part number in the ZF web catalogue or whoever is the part manufacturer. They are usually pretty accurate just to double check the relevant part (not price).

Sadly, my “repair” didn’t work, but I had a replacement hose on the way. Autodoc had the Mercedes part number on their listing, so I did a google search with that.

Just need to extract the plastic under-tray now, so I can get at the hose easier. Has anyone done that on a W211? Wish I had a lift, it would be so much easier!

New hose ordered off eBay on Saturday morning, and arrived this morning. Fitted this evening, took about half an hour, including a bit of faffing about with the plastic undertray.

Very happy to report the car is now sorted! Gave it a good run out, and got rid of all manner of soot and rubbish when I booted it! A good old Italian tune-up sorted that :)

Thank you to everyone that contributed advice and help. It’s really appreciated!
