Why did you buy your Merc?

Just wondered what motivated the members to buy a Mercedes.
Was it the heart or the head?
For me it was a bit of both. I had been financially strained by 3 years of my previous dream, a Jag XJ, so I wanted something (slightly) cheaper to run. I don't need to do too sensible or 'ordinary' so within my £8k-£10k budget I narrowed my choice down to Jag S-type, Audi A6, Merc CLK or Merc SLK. Children now have their own cars so no real need for a big 4 seater so it became a coice of the two Mercs. I have to admit once I drove an SLK on a beautiful day with the roof down, the heart took over and the SLK won.

I just wanted a comfortable auto after my rattly Discovery, to get me to work everday, reliably. Seems to have been the right choice so far, but now I am looking for a ( third) VW Camper, my heart really is ruling my head on this one.

The quality. My "day job" is as a chartered mechanical engineer and I just love the quality and excellent design of Mercedes.

Heart and head. Heart wanted a MB, head said diesel for economy and MB for reliability . Nearly four years later I couldn't be happier with my choice, it is so much better than the vectras/mondeos/passats I had before. It is also cheap to run, faster than my licence allows and very comfortable. I want to go for a drive now :D

Spur of the moment decision

I was actually looking at other automatics and was pointed in my cars direction by the garage owner. Now proud owner of my first MB and first diesel.

Similar to Blobcat's reponse above. I wanted a larger saloon but it had to be diesel to cost in. That ruled out the Lexus GS (smallest engine is 3ltre petrol)and didn't really want a S type jag so picked a E class CDI - very happy so far

In answer to the question. How do you transport 3 children 2 adults and a dog, with the option of 7 seats? A Mercedes E class, what else.

Owning a 300TE for twelve years proved the ideal solution and more besides. Also providing excellent engineering, reliabilty and enormous load space.

So much so that I have made the same choice again, my present car a E320CDi eatate gives me all the above plus performance and economy, could I ask for more.

This time I went for all the goodies, very important with MB.

for the well established reputation in terms of build quality.

ok so mercs are expensive, but you do get what you pay for.

When I was 16 and passed my test (in the US) I test drove a 1971 S-class 4.5. I loved it until I got my insurance quote, which was more than the price of the car (in 1992, before they were worth real money). With 13 years of NCB since, although the 'stacked headlamp' has ventured into proper classic status, its younger sister in the form of a 126 put a smile on my face from the first drive. The fact I already braced myself for big repair bills by using an early Citroen CX as a daily driver, makes running a middle aged Merc a sensible proposition. And, it was engineered like no other car in the world. There will never be a car made as well again. I hope to drive it until the petrol pumps run dry.

I needed something big to carry 3 kids + luggage etc., and was bored with MPV's.

Test drove the E320 CDI and loved it, and also loved the way it looked. I think it is the Jeckyl and Hyde factor that I like the most (it can be a relaxing long distance cruiser, but then get on an 'A' road and enjoy the performance!).

Its simple really, First time i saw the advert for merc with the track ...

"Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
"

So when choosing the car,
1: I am too old (and a bit serious) for boy racer cars
2: I am not going through my mid life crises to buy a porsche
3: Didnt want to spend most of time in garage so TVR out of question
4: Not old enough for Jaguar XK, S-Class Merc or even BMW 7 series
5: cant afford Ferrari, lambo or SL (new shape)
6: SLK and Z3 isnt the most masculine one around
7: Always like curves of Jennifer Lopez (out of reach), so thought CLK (old shape) is as closest I can get to driving her ;). the new shape is more of Paris Hilton , doesnt have an impressive back .... Soooooooo ended up with CLK (w208 ) :)

p.s. I dont mean no disrespect to the owners of other cars mentioned in my post.

Hi all, a newbie to the forum, I bought mine as I wanted something, big, comfortable, powerful and hopefully reliable.

So far so good, I enjoy the feeling of solidity, used to own C900T Saab's, then jap turbos for several years, wanted another Saab but couldn't find a decent LHD one, stumbled across my 'E' on ebay, It had cloth seats and a/c (essential over here;)) I bid and won, flew to the uk to collect it and had a touring holiday through France and Spain on the way home!

:)

I wanted a four door saloon with a little bit of performance, Evo's and Impreza's don't really suit my image plus I wanted an automatic, I've reached the grand old age of 30 and now getting a insurance policy on a group 20 car is not like taking a second mortgage.

Ermmm I'm 37 (all over grey hair though) starting to wonder!

An it was all heart that made me buy it, just thought oh my f*cking god. The brain says everyday that I should buy a 1ltr diesel van but heart says no.
