hi everyone, i was at my local MB main dealer and there were several 2 to 3 yr. old e-300 estates etc. for sale. but aesthetically i prefer the one i have, 97. e-300 td. 7 seat. eleg. est. mine is worth £4K, and the ones mentioned are circa £15 to £20K.

the value of my car falls short of what i have spent on it in the past 3 yrs, but i paid £51K. back in 1997. it has never missed a beat in 12yrs and 193,000 miles. it still looks immaculate, no rust and drives just the same as in 1997.

i could scrape up the £20K. but what would i gain ? i see the 124's some immaculate and 15yrs old, they all look solid and non of the old mercs in my opinion give the gypo feeling like the old jags do. what do you think, are old mercs somthing special ? or is it old age and not wanting to spend our money on a new streamlined model. ? herbiemercman.

The more electronics that we get ,, the lower will be the price and value of our cars in the future,,soon they will all be like a BMW 730i of the 8o's worthless and sold for a few hundred pounds when the engine ECU went down, as the replacement cost some £4k back then.

Take a 230 SL,,what will they be worth when they need some struts and a couple of SAMs almost nill

well i sold a 2003 7 series and bought a 1994 W124 estate for that very reason. nice car and i do miss all the fancy gadgets it had, but overall never looked back - easy to work on myself and if something goes wrong i know its not going to be a nightmare (and ££££s to fix!)

a nice example of an older mercedes knocks socks off run of the mill euro-boxes that you could get for similar money. a good example will not loose too much money either.

i quite fancy a W211 estate..... but if the W124 is working fine, then i have to admit whether it would be worth it TBH.

Quality never goes out of style and as I said on a previous post, what other cars could you run happily for 10+ years and still look good pulling up outside a fancy resturant?

I was at a pub last week and parked up near my shiny 211 was an M reg 124. Did I pity the owner? No I looked at and thought, what a lovely car.

These old cars were designed by engineers not accountants and are generally well over engineered. That is why I have the cars I have, and wouldn't swap them for a newer model for all the tea in China.

many (obviously not all) older merc owners - especially pre 1990 probably drive about in these older models because they want to, not that they cant afford to go out an purchase a new one. thats the difference between, say a new Renault Laguna vs a Renault 21 or Mk1 Laguna!

come on Helen

Chateau Palmer 61, or this year's Beaujolais to-be? Not much of a choice really. Unless you like Sarsons that is.

technically

all my cars are well younger than me though. Unless we get in some kind of dog years/car years equivalence discussion.
So what do you think. One car year is like 5 human years.
