Hi can anyone say what this is and actually does??...this seems to rattle when my car a 1999 300td E CLASS ESTATE starts up when cold...if i put some pressure on it with my hand when it is rattling it goes away. and when it warms up it stops...at first i thought my timing chain was goosed, then my water pump, but it seems to be this part which is the culprit...is it some sort of damper??....thanks in advance Stu

as colin says above ^. it can be left as it is but the noise is annoying. although it may look easy to replace, the bottom bolt will need either the tensioner arm or the pulley removing to access.

Common fault on the 606 engine. You can sometimes get round the problem (the break up of the top metalastik bush) by removing the top bolt, inserting a thick rubber washer between the block & the tensioner & nipping the bolt back up again

They are cheap from MB and not worth using a secondhand one
