I'm wanting to restore the alloys from my 500 SEL over winter and have been offered a set of 15" steel rims that came of a 1991 E-class saloon. I'm not going to be running the 500 SEL about over winter so the wheels are simply to put on and move it up and down the drive occasionally.
The steel wheels offered are 6.5J x 15 H2 and have an ET49 offset stamped into the wheel too.
Just wondered if anybody knows if W124 wheels will go straight on to a W126 car?

If you are just going to park it up with the steel wheels it will be o.k. but don't drive it with them, you will also need the short bolts so they do not protude into the brake shoes. Hope this helps

Thats a handy chart cheers. Is the offset measured in mm's?

Yes it is, and the higher the number the further in they will sit, in your case some 15mm and that means that they may not clear the brakes

Why would it be safe to put them on but not drive on them. I'm a tad confused???

You have a big danger here that the wheels could foul the brakes being that they would sit in some 17mm

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but the ET is the measurement between the back edge of the rim where the tyre bead sits and the back face of the wheel centre that sits on the hub face isn't it?
Surely the danger is the back rim edge touching the struts is it not, you'd only foul the brakes if you put a smaller diameter of wheel on??

You can never guarantee that, the ET is measured from the center of the wheel

Maybe I'll just have to try them and see. From the looks of things the calipers are set fairly well back, I wasn't worried about the brakes to be honest, more concerned about them hitting the struts at front or inner arches at back. They are 1/2 inch narrower tho so that may compensate. Could also use the orig longer alloy bolts and slide a spacer (over-sized not) between wheel and hub to bring the W124 wheels out further. Cars not being driven, just moved 15 yards up the drive occasionally
