I don't want to open the bonnet, done that too often, I want the maintenance free car we were promised years ago.
I have bashed every bit of me, skinned knuckles, burnt myself, and watched others do it.
I have absorbed all manner of noxious gases and substances to what effect who knows ?
I would like the future now, my nuclear Mercedes 25 year refuels almost limitless energy and when I have had enough the RAF can drop it on whoever we fall out with next.

The push button wizzo electric toffs will start the next world war.
Someones computer avatar will fall out with some elses and we will emerge from the fallout after having stopped armageddon by pulling out the plug.

Electric - Nah never.

Can you imagine going to your shed and instead of getting out your nice shiny spanners to tinker with your fine diesel engine, you would be taking hold of one of those volt tester thingies with all the flashing lights and secret codes that you have to try and decipher.

No give me pistons and liners any day

Chat in the future - What did you do to your Merc today? - I rebuilt the battery!!

Regards

Bill

I remember when,

And it feels like 100yrs ago,

that I was dropping BMC 2.2 diesel engines in Ford Zephyrs and the like.

People laughed and scoffed, and said things like " diesel cars? ; never" " Diesel engines are for trucks and busses"

`Nuff said`

Well I am in my 70s and like Malcome have seen a few changes in transport, I have a mobility scooter that I use for the shops and pub 8mph ,do not have to pay for parking and cut through the path ways, just as quick for me as it is a good walk from the car park to bank, post office, ect. Like looking at the steam trains but do not miss traveling on them, as we used to get our clothes sooty and faces . I think the trolley buses were a good idea reasonable quick and warm inside, but you could not hear them coming, Trams were noisy, and cold in winter. A couple of my neighbours have battery/petrol cars but change them every 3 yrs in case they have to fork out for new batteries. Hope this helps

But thats all they were good for back then.
Only in recent times have they become worthwhile, hence the rise in cost of diesel.

As for Zephyrs (and Zodiacs ;) ) I used to take the engines from them and use in Fords  Capris mostly with big 3.2 v6's. One out and in, in a weekend.
Those were the days. :D

my thread was based on the pleasure of running a big diesel car, BUT i can see the logic of the small run about cars being electric, as somone has said they could easily be rigged to give an exhaust note. my wife has a corsa and it very rarely travels more than 3 miles in each journey, so this is an abuse of a petrol engine, it also drinks juice.

the mobility scooters are getting more prolific and they seem to perform well bringing mobility to many old and some young people.

SO it would be good if we could develop the electric cars for local journeys and save the diesel for the bigger cars, having said that i think it will last long enough for most of us on this forum. herbiemercman.

An electric car would in theory suit my MIL but the cost, range and what do you do with it when its run out of watts ? point was unassailable.

Absolutely; my thoughts as well, but battery technology is advancing all the time, and, according to the F.T. massive cheap batteries that can store off peak green produced energy are within reach.

It remains to be seen what the Government would do about the loss of fuel revenue if electric cars took off bigtime. I can`t see G. Osbourne & co letting us plug them in at home.
