C 180 Classic SE Komp 54 Plate
Recently acquired C180 Komp SE 54 reg came with windscreen scoring covering complete semi circle arc on drivers side

The scoring is not deep but looks unsightly

I have been advised that an expensive complete windscreen replacement is required, and uncertain as to whether my insurers (Admiral) will bear the cost minus the £95.00 excess

Reluctant to call them, as it could be logged as a claim thereby affecting the renewal premium

I can consider a cheaper option by using a windscreen scoring removal compound, but unsure as to how effective this may be - and perhaps not a job for the feint hearted !

Any advice on the above appreciated - and more particularly is the removal compound really effective without weakening or damaging the windscreen ?

Using Jewellers Rouge to remove scratches is a long and arduous job, and deep scratches are just plain hard work. :(

I don't know whether you could acquire a screen from a breakers yard ? If it isn't broken of course

No signs of any crack - just shallow scoring

I did raise this with a windscreen replacement company (obtaining one from a breaker yard) but they would not consider

A windscreen Co. obviously would not entertain a second hand screen, but have you asked an independant specialist repairer ?. Might be a different story :)

not a difficult job,.... more faffing about cleaning everything up prior to refitting/sealing the replacement i have done a number, getting things ready to put screen back and leaving sealant to cure is the biggest issue.

Windscreen replacement doesn’t affect NCB (well it never has on any of my insurance policies)

A few years ago whilst my wife was stopped a temporary traffic lights, a deer ran out of a hedge row, and scrambled over the roof of the merc. It left a slight dent in the A post and various scuffs in the front screen. Like you I hunted for a solution. In the end I bought a glass polishing kit off ebay. The kit came with some small circular pads and a bottle of white abrasive liquid. I cleaned the screen as per the instructions and off I went, using a rechargeable drill. After a reasonable short time I finished. The kit took all the scuff marks out but I left a couple of the deeper scores even though they were a lot better. The car went through a couple of MOTs with me and were still there but hardly recognisable when I eventually sold it for a newer model. Would I do it again? Yep, the kit is still in the shed. A word of caution though, I noticed that whilst polishing, the screen got VERY HOT. very quickly, and I used to stop every so often to let it cool down.

A colleague borrowed my company car whilst I was away on a business trip. He admitted to wiping off condensate on the inside of windscreen (not realising the car had air con that would cleared it quick smart [it was a long time ago]) with his hand that had a signet ring with a diamond mounted in it. Some very nice patterns scratched into the windscreen.

To the OP it shouldn't affect your NCB for a windscreen change, just the nominal glass excess.

Drop a 4lb engineering hammer on the windscreen by accident. Then go through Autoglass. :D

An auto centre pop is a little more subtle ..... ;)
Are you sure there isn't a small crack on it somewhere .....
You sure you couldn't find one if you looked really really hard?
you might find one with one of these .... ;);)
And you couldn't use cold water to cool it otherwise it'd crack .....;):D:D
