if you find that you are having unusual and unexplained problems with your car, then please check your battery. The weather is getting colder and that means you turn on your heat (blower), heated rear windscreen, the side wing mirrors automatically heat below minus 15c, and of course those of you that are lucky to have heated seats will most likely have them on.

I've seen problems myself with my own car about one winter ago, (starting issues, strange things happening) and once i replaced the 12 year old mercedes original battery i was good to go

I'm no expert at this stuff, but i'd just thought i'd remind you all, especially seeing as newer models seem to auto-drain the battery anyway......

cheers

Hi anyweb

By 'auto-drain' do you mean flatten the battery? Not familiar with that term.

My battery failed (dead cell) during the last cold spell and was subsequently replaced. However, I did learn one thing ... the car prevents the battery from being drained by heavy use (repeated starting) of the battery. It fooled me when I first encountered the the self-protection mechanism. I wrongly diagnosed the condition as a battery connection problem when the engine refused to turnover but there was suffient current for heating and lighting.

Are you saying that the battery protection mechanism may no longer be a feature of the latest models? That would be a retrograde step, IMO. However, it wouldn't surprise me because Mercedes appear to be looking at any methods they can use to cut costs.

hi Phil, yeah that's what I mean by auto-drain, perhaps there's no such thing (word) but , see this post for more info,

and thanks for mentioning the dead cell, because that's what happened to my battery, one dead cell meaning it was incapable of charging properly and that meant my car would be very hard to start in the morning, along with the trip and other functions resetting themselves when i turned the key

cheers
