Right then gents, here's a challenge for you. I need to get winter tyres for the bus (W211 estate) to suit the following:

Fr: 245/40R18
Rr: 265/35R18

What would you recommend and from where? I'm struggling to get a set of quality matching tyres fr & rr at a decent price.

price should not be an issue when your life is at stake.

^ indeed!
Those were the same tyre sizes I had on my 212 - Vredestein Wintrac extremes were what I had. I got those from one of your usual suspects mytyres...

The rear tyre is the one that is hard to find unless you go Michelin / Conti

Look at Blackcircles.com and at camskill.co.uk :)

Ps you could think about reducing width, and going up in aspect, (to keep same rolling radius) as narrower tyre works well on snow too!
This could open up greater range to choose from....and save money!

All season?

E Tyres have Kumho Wintercraft in both front and rears 156 for the rears and 134 for the fronts so 580 ish for all 4 corners. I dont personally have any experience with Kumho but I believe they're decent....

I had Khumos on my Legacy GTB, - very good mid price tyre, with performance that was better than some 'premium' brands.
Tyrereview.co.uk was good for checking.

Thanks for the responses chaps.

JBell, yes you're correct, the rears are a pig to find.

KBell- I had Kuhmo summer tyres on the A3 and it was more squirelly than Squirry the squirrel saying "Neep neep neep". Never tried their winters though.

I'd love to give the Vredensteins a go as I've heard nowt but good things about them. Just finding a set at a decent ££ is my problem!

Before you commit to buying online, I've found it's always worth a chat with a local tyre fitter if you have one nearby.

Most will try to price match, or at least come close, and with a bit of discount on fitting and balancing, there are still some deals to be had.

Already tried that Dave, there is precisely one tyre fitter that isn't Kwik Fit within 30 miles of me and they're pretty useless when it comes to anything outside of "run of the mill" tyres. Experience of them so far has been poor.

I had Kumho KU31 on my Impreza when they first came out, they were considerably better than the Bridgestone that I took off

Any opinion on Yokohama W. Drive V902B? Currently best benchmark point, checking in at £132.25 front and £149.98 rears, total £564.46...

Again I haven't tried Yokohama winters , I have used summers and a very hard and high wear rate tyre I found similar to Bridgestones and Pirelli P Zero...

Mytyres is where I buy mine and Oponeo is where I buy summers (and all season for the smart)

It certainly is! Those are supremely good

When I was skiing last year most cars had then instead of dedicated winters, I spoke to the guys who owned the chalet and they only ever use them now, saves having two sets of wheels and tyres
