Wiper blades - red face

Hello
An embarassing situation has arisen in replacing the wiper blade on my newly acquired W210 (E3200)for the first time - just the single wiper on the front screen). I clipped the replacement blade in place in seconds but the wiper arm has locked in an inclined position and I can't see how to release it to sit back on the screen. Any advice gratefully received as need to drive shortly and can't see myself on the M25 with the wiper pointing skyward :Oops:

A quick Google brings up a couple of items that say you just push it back down, but it may take a surprising amount of force and make a horrible noise!

One of them says to be careful to push it back down in the same plane at it came up - I guess it means not to twist the arm.

Hit the wiper arm… the wider part… a severe smack with the palm of your hand. If you push it, it won’t go, it needs a fast whack.

Solved

Thanks Rory

A happy ending - applied liberal amounts of WD40 to the spring and mechanism inside the arm and it now easily snaps in and out of the incline position with not much effort - good old WD40 -it's right up there with duct tape :)

duct tape

I actually used duct tape on a duct the other day! The kitchen extractor fan outlet was a different size to the cowl in the wall.

The WD 40 will migrate from the wipers hub/arm pivot as the wind due to driving the car blows across it, it will become an aerosol of extremely fine droplets and some will settle on the windscreen glass, this film will be scrubbed around by your nice new wiper blade leaving behind a streaky film which will impair your vision every time it rains, that is until you fit a new blade because the old new one has gone all perished and useless.

WD40 best left in the can 'cos there is always something better, it works for removing tar from the paint work though.

Not only that, WD40 will dissolve the arm grease and cause the mechanism to fail due to running dry

Some old codgers here use WD40 as an arthritis treatment....

By the way, anyone here ever clean the blade as well as the grit and debris underneath when they do the windscreen clean, even at a service station?

Remove that grit, and your blade(s) will last longer.

Also the clear vision through the glass will last longer
