The single wiper mechanism has suddenly gotten jerky on my C220 1995.
Its as though the cam that moves the arm outwards is sticking.

After a few cycles its ok, nice and smooth again but next time at first switch on its jerky again . . .

Any suggestions before I try and take it apart to see if it can be lubricated please, assuming it can be lubricated ?

Had the same problem on my C220D.
The local dealer looked at it and in 5 minutes had lubricated the 'pin' and mechanism and have had no problems since. The Haynes book doesn't show you how to do it though (I looked !)
Unfortunately I didn't see what the mechanic did .......... but they didn't charge me either.
Hope that helps

"hope it helps" ??

You're kidding, Norman, thats absolutely brilliant, thank you very much.

I had already managed to remove the plastic cap from the lower end revealing the rod. Lubricated it with WD40 for a temporary fix so as not to burn out the motor as I thought would happen. These notes on your link I will do at the weekend and do a proper job,

thanks again - brilliant forum this - just what its about :D

thanks Norman,

regards

Just in case I have been too helpful - just found these notes on 'another' forum:

Subject: Subject: [MB] monowiper transmissions -- repair and service

Must be at least three versions, then. The "hard" cover on my '93 W124 does NOT seem to have any sort of releasable clips as described above or in the FAQ's. I've read elsewhere that for some monowipers, the whole assembly must be removed from the car and be dissassembled to clean and relube.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I agree on at least three versions. I tried the method of removing the cover by lifting tabs but my 91 190e 2.3 has a hard cover with screws on the underside. These screws are not reachable without removing the entire transmission. After about 1 hour of trying to remove the transmission per the previous instructions I realized my cover was different. ran out of time and patients for the day. Weather has since gotten cold and have decided to try again when I have more time and patience. The recess is very tight. Good luck, please respond with your success.

Well I tried lubing the mechanism on Sunday as per Normans link below
http://business.baylor.edu/Richard_Easley/autofaqs/wiper.htm
and it was exactly right.

With the wiper 'parked' at 12 o'clock (straight up for those with a digital watch :) first remove the 3 sided plastic cover at the base of the blade
and then the main large rounded plastic cover can be removed and slid up the arm by easing it out at a lower left and lower right positions eg 5oclock and 7 oclock. Its very easy.
Any queries - let me know.
