I'm making an inteligent guess here.............
Look at the wiper motor see if you can spot the feed,
prob' a plastic coated spade connector. Remove check
for a voltage to earth as some one runs the wiper sw' thro' its cycle.
If there is a supply at all sw' settings the fault lies with the motor, check motor earth connection.
For pearls of wisdom Television may have an answer
you need to do a search to find where he's been banished to..........................

Hi Missyd,
If its only working on fast speed the wiring should be ok, it will be your column switch U/S, apparently they can be cleaned with contact cleaner, but if this is not successful it will have to be a new switch i,m afraid.
What car is it for? as they can be quite cheap around £40-£60 from Euro's, probably cheaper from a breakers.

I agree with Andy, that it is likely the stalk switch is at fault, however in view of the fact that the wipers failed before and are now only working on the fast speed, there is the possibility that the gear teeth have been striped inside the motor. You can try the following.

With the ignition on, turn the wiper switch to the lower speed setting, (Normal speed not fastest setting) you will need to open and listen under the bonnet as you will not hear the motor very well inside the car.
If you can hear the motor running then there is indeed damage to the gear teeth.
If you can’t hear the motor running then it is likely that it is indeed the stalk that is at fault.

Hi

I did what you suggested Dec and there wasnt a motor sound, just a slight click on and then off. Do you think the fault is in the stalk then? If so, is this something simple that I maybe able to sort out.

Its an E200 (L reg) bigasotonuk.

Thanks guys

I think Its the motor i am afraid. The reason it works in fast as the park position indicator in the motor isn't required as it runs constant.

The “slight click on and then off” that you heard would indicate that you had the wiper on the intermittent setting when you were listening under the bonnet as the click was coming from the relay. Dose the arrow line up correctly with the markings 0 l ll lll. on the stalk, see pictures in link below.

To replace the stalk involves removing the steering wheel and air bag, I haven’t done this myself so can’t advise. It’s all down to whatever knowledge you may have. Have a look at the bottom of this thread… http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=44301&highlight=1994+C280+turn+signal%2Fwiper+issue (click on the thumb nails to enlarge them)

Have another listen for the motor, just to eliminate this possibility, only this time have the wiper switch set to normal speed position which is ll, not intermittent. If there were still no sound from motor then I would have to agree with others that it must be the stalk.

Ellsy Tanners question has produced some new evidence from the accused, if the blade is not parking then the switch #1 in the first picture in post #17 HERE must be damaged or not contacting the rail. However that wont explain why normal or intermittent are not working.
