Wires on the diff

My friend has a C class diesel,there is a wire going to the rear diff,can anyone tell me what it is for?.

It is certainly not a diff locker, on a car like that.

Sue, are you sure they're not the speed sensor wires for ASR (traction control)?

Tom.I dont think it has traction control,it is a 1995 model.
Not sure. :-(

You are correct,because there are no sensors at the rear wheels.
