My car doesn't appear to have heated seats or anything like that, but there are wires running to the underside of each front seat. What are they for?

Its a 1997 E300DT Elegance

I think that they are there in case you wish to add heated seats.

Hmm, would the elements be in there by any chance? Possibly a MB move to save money by only supplying one seat? If that were the case perhaps its only missing a switch?

Some people buy the pads from Ebay and wire the switches to the side of the seat. There was a thread here recently on this subject, not very far back

Hi

The wires to the seats are for air bag sensors and the seatbelt tensioner i thought

Parrot of Doom did not say if these wires were loose and just sitting there.
Most car maker's use a standard harness, its cheaper and reduces stock.
