I intend to carry out as much routine maintenance on my 92' 500SL, R129, as possible. Where do i purchase a workshop manual?

Haynes does not support the R129, is that correct?

Manual for 500SL

Hi cmdr737

I bought a Haynes manual today and in the back it contains a complete listing of their currently available manuals. The 500SL is not listed. You will have to look elsewhere.

I, too, couldn't find a manual covering my C-class but I did discover a Haynes manual covering the C-class 'family'. This manual will cover >95% of the things I need to know if I wanted to attempt my own servicing.

I have supplemented my Haynes manual by purchasing electronic manuals (CD) on eBay. These are M-B's TIS and WIS series which cover a broad range of M-Bs in great technical detail. You may be able to find one on eBay for your car. You will need a PC though.

C-class W202 Manuals

I have a Haynes manual that cover the W202 C-class but it specifically excludes the kompressor models. I have a C230K and as far as I am aware there has never been a paper manual produced to cover the supercharged W202s. I don't know about the new CD/DVD manuals you can buy on eBay. Maybe they give details of the supercharged engines.

I would like to know what are the differences between the normally aspirated and supercharged models and can I rely upon the information contained in my manual to cover everything else about my car except for the engine and supercharger OR everything including the engine but excluding the supercharger? I suppose it all depends on whether the supercharger can be regarded as a bolt-on ancilliary item.

Are the supercharged engines identical to their normally aspirated models or are they special, stronger, substantially different in order to be able to tolerate the increased pressures of forced induction and appreciably higher outputs?

Is there any information ANYWHERE about what lies beneath the bonnet of a supercharged W202? Pictures/photographs would be a big help too.

Hi Paul

I took a look at this website and it does indeed give some technical details of the inner workings of a range of MB vehicles, including my own model, the W202. The website contains a long list of PDF files but I didn't find them clearly organized but there must be a logic to their grouping.

Yes, I did find details relating to the two types of compressor fitted to the kompressor models. There were pictures too showing the ports and cutaway sections showing the internal rotors. I particularly liked the diagrams showing the air pathways and how air is recirculated and regulated thereby controlling the pressure.

What was less clear, however, was which diagrams related to my particular model. There were diagrams of compressor installations but I had no idea to which model they belonged.

I assume other sites, similar to this one, exist, pehaps catering for European models rather than their lefthand drive counterparts.

Still, this is a useful website and worth a closer look. Thanks again.

I suspect that site is breaking some kind of copyright rules....that stuff looks pretty detailed and technical, the type of thing they'd try and sell in a service manual. I purchased a USA "Service Manual Library" CD from ebay, for the W114. Once postage and all was included, it was £17 or so. They're less easy to understand, for a beginner, but there is no annoying "this job is for a pro, take it to a garage" advice like you find in the Haynes manuals at times! Although its for a W114, a lot of the service and maintenance task stuff covers other models from the era.

Thanks Paul

I had a look at this website and found it has many PDF files containing technical information about MB vehicles. The infomation is for training purposes.

The information provided what I was looking for, the various supercharger installations fitted to MB's kompressor models. However, it was difficult to associate the information with the various models. You have to examine each file in turn to see what it contains. This is many hours of work. You can learn very little from the files' titles, however, you can pick out the odd word which will give a clue as their content.

It would be useful if there was a European version of this website because this one is clearly intended for the American market.

I did an ebay search for "CD" in the Mercedes parts category (needlessly long link: http://search.ebay.co.uk/CD_Mercede...QQsacatZ10398QQsaslcZ3QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZbs) and it seems, these are all USA manuals. I guess the USA has "Freedom of Information" stuff which means its easy to obtain these, while in the UK they would stay within the dealer network or something.

Shame it doesn't cover the 230TE.....

I really doubt you'll find a website with this type of quality info on it - copyright reasons, etc...

www.ebay.co.uk will get you the real Mercedes WIS (workshop information system) on 2 x DVDs for £9.95. ou will need XP pro, windows NT of W2K to load it (not good for XP Home). Covers ALL models from 1993 to 2003 but will need 5 gig of space on your PC. Its for Merc dealers so has absolutely everything you will ever need.

Hi coully

Is paulcallender correct, the information contained in these CDs/DVDs is biased towards the American market, i.e. the information is largely applicable to American Mercedes models?

I got something (dvd) of ebay for a tenner that covers all models back to the early 80's. There doesn't seem to be any bias to the american market, in fact it's more German than anything else.

It's a very good tool and way ahead of haynes.

Yep... the ones to get are the 2x DVD set. They cover the european models (eg mine E200). The american ones are a dead giveaway - you will only ever see E320 and above in the E class range.

Theres quite a bit to installing them and after you do, its worth printing out the help guide (PDF file about 150 pages) so taht you can learn how to use it. It is a genuine thing from mercedes, in fact when you install it its in german and you have to carefully follow the instructions to change the language.

In use it can be extremely useful, at other times it can be frustrating just finding the info that you want. Most times I have gone to it I have gotten the info I need, but not always.

I think it cost me ?26 home and dry.. and it came from the USA. I'm sure a search on ebay will throw it up.

There are 2 distinct things. 1) Service Manual Library, these seem to be US-orientated. 2) Electronic Parts Catalogue, these are not biased towards any region. In fact I think its worldwide, for all Mercedes products, eg trucks, Smart, Maybach, etc.

Some jobs are helped just by looking at an exploded parts diagram, eg. rebuilding a fuel injection system. And others, you'd need the service manual, for example you'd never find the toe-in settings in the parts catalogue.

The 2 DVD set:

Its wis (workshop information system) covers all models from 1970 to feb 2005. Covers all models euro/usa etc etc.

You need windows XP/NT (not for MAC AFAIK). It might work on 98SE but not sure. The reason for this is that you need a network card installed to be able to use it but there may be a fix to allow you to use it if you don't have a network card.

Its quite good - well worth the few bob - even covers tractors! You can link it into the EPC and the error code software from MB too.

If you have PC its worth buying

turbospud,

you need to go and print out the PDF help section. Double click on the WIS desktop icon, select infobox/asra and then help from the toolbar down on the bottom left. You need to have adobe acrobat reader installed. Then print out/read the instructions on the screen and away you go. You have to appreciate that this is a professional piece of software and anyone in the MB world who would be using it would be given training and that we are using it cold so..... a bit of extra time is needed.

The short route (AFAICT) is that you go to infobox 1 first and enter in you model, engine and autobox numbers and then select "Documentation". Then the infobox 2 opens and you can search for the info you want.
