I had my lower front ball joints replaced at the dealer today (E320, 2003 model) after another garage had told me they could not do tracking until they were replaced. The car has only done 30K. The dealer said it was a common fault on the E class. Is this true? My warranty runs out in 2 months -I'm glad it was spotted early!!

Whats going on theses days, I just told one guy that it was unheard of in 30K, Oh well , I can now say normal to be gone in 30k, next year it will drop to 20k. could this be caused by turning the wheel, while the car is not moving, when parking for instance.

A distinct posibility Malcolm, however mine are still fine at 106Kmiles. I make a habit of only turning the steering whilst the car is moving. The strain when turning at standstill is tremendous. I suppose starting out in a Land Rover with no Power Steering taught me. As power steering is the norm nowadays I think these will be wearing out much sooner as we are staring to see.

It has to be Blobcat, my Volvo at 70k and my MB I know only 39k are like new. I was going to use the word tremendous myself but I could not think how to spell it. Me too, only turn the wheel with car moving.

I haven't changed my driving style. I drove 110K in my saab and did not have this problem. Should I be selling my E320? Is this a sign of worse to come?

That's a hard question, I ran my 1990 SAAB 9000 Executive for 150k miles, never had it serviced once, changed my own oil, it passed every MOT and I never replaced anything other than brake pads and filters, Sadly I know just as many SAAB owners of newer cars that spend as much time as MB's in the garage. Your E320 is a nice car, the ball joints do not cost much, keep it going.
