Hi all, maybe a daft question, how do I tell if the actual headlight is xenon or non xenon, I need a new headlight unit, and noticed a significant cost difference between the 2

Easy way to tell is by looking at the back/top of the headlight cluster, if they are xenon they will have a warning about electrocution on then. Other quick way would be to post a picture up of what you have, we should be able to tell you pretty quickly

Xenon headlights do an up- down- lefty- righty dance when turned on, too.

Outwardly there's usually little visual difference between xenon/HID headlight & a 'normal' projector headlight.

This is the best way, or alternatively pull the lamp out of the back and have a look…

Can you replace just the ballast module, or does it need to be the whole unit?
Ballasts are replaceable and don’t need coding.

Certainly looks like xenon from that picture
Not necessarily- my C207 (same platform as OP’s) had Halogens with projector lenses. (Yes, they were halogen and bl00dy useless)

View attachment 78044 These are the bulbs that are fitted
That’s your problem… you’ve non halogen lamps fitted to halogen units. The light source won’t be in the correct position for the reflector so giving a poor pattern - as well as blinding other road users and being illegal to boot…

Get some Osram nightbreakers and make your car safe (and legal)

Many threads on here about aftermarket illegal xenon and led units being fitted to halogen units
