Since the 22 December I have put 1300 miles on my 1992 230TE, mostly a long run from home to North London, to Heathrow, to Bristol, to Exeter and home. I still have not completely sorted the idle problem, but for a car with 193000 on the clock it performed faultlessly - quiet, super responsive on the motorway thanks to the engine being "on the cam" at 3500 revs at 70mph, and averaging well over 30mpg.
Oh, and feeling completely stable and safe on the road, even at the stupid speeds necessary to despatch the chavs in their Corsas.
There is persuasive logic in buying one of these and spending whatever it needs to make it right (providing you can DIY), and then putting 20000 miles on it. I suspect that over that mileage my buying, maintenance, and depreciation cost will be around 1p per mile. OK it uses a bit of petrol - so what?
Super cheap, super nice motoring.
