..bad day at work. whilst replacing a fuel gauge on a wonderful w113, i broke the glass . oh dear, sls did not list one, just the bezel at something like £100 :confused:.

this did not make me happy, had the same effect on the boss too, unsurprisingly. a quick google last night revealed no source of spares and no how to guides, i slept only fitfully, plagued by dreams of enraged chrome huggers (classics enthusiasts). this morning i had a look at getting the oh so delicate bezel off, and bingo! it turned out to be fairly easy . take the broken piece of glass to the glazing place next door and within 20 minutes they had fashioned a new one from scratch for - wait for it - £6 . it fits a treat and the bezel looks like new :D. so today was a good day at work ;)

....untill i had a go at that glow plug, all the usual failed, including drilling out the threaded portion to 8.5mm and tapping the center, actually broke the slide hammer :(. mind you, tomorrow is another day...

Set up a remapping business ................. fiddle with a lappy and Bobs your uncle

They improve MPG aswell .......... so you'd get job satisfaction !

As long as you have your health don't let any thing else worry you, my day was not so good ,did some one a favour and some thing small from the road made a pin hole in the radiator , and it has not stopped raining since so I can not get out there to take it off for repair. Hope this helps

thanks all for the empathy.

thumper that is a brilliant idea!! improves mpg you say? i wonder if there is a discussion about that somewhere...

kevin, we have walked away from that one. one of the other old glow plugs has been shortened to secure the remaining end of the seized one. bottom line is if we pursue it further it could end up costing us money. frustrating though as this is THE FIRST ONE i have ever failed to remove. i usually reduce the length to about 30mm + the tip, tap out the center to 6mm and pull out with a nut/bolt and spacers as you have done. in this case it got close to the breaking point of the bolt so i tried the slide hammer - no joy! thanks for your offer of help, i suspect you are similar to me in so far as you see problems as needing to be solved - not side stepped!

refitted that w113 instrument though and it looks better than ever! a real swine to work on these old instruments, but pays by the hour...i will try to think about that and my good health as i drift off tonight.
