But only if it's a W211 or W220 with code 979 "Special Protection Vehicle"

On the 211 both the windscreen and front side windows are heated. The 220 only got the front screen. Power consumption is 42A for the screen and 10.5A each the side windows. The windows are heated when the defrost button is pressed and the engine running. Time on is dependent on engine speed, from 6min at standstill to 11min at 100kph.

So there must be heated screens out there available that should fit a 'std' 211 / 220 but I cannot find any part numbers. For a retrofit you would also need a heated window relay control module and a special vehicle multifunction control unit.

Nice little project for someone!

surely thats only the quickclear name though? its not exactly rocket science to put a thin heating element into glass. after all they do it to the rear and sides (on estates) so why not the front screen?

didnt someone else have their own version (possibly vauxhall or peugeot) a few years back too?

Ford patened the idea of a wired element in a windscreen, as far as Im aware a proper patent lasts for 20 years... the caterham would have used a ford screen under license.. ..
There are thousands of good ideas out there.. not able to be brought to the market because big companies patent the ideas and then dont use them...just so that another company cant get the jump on them..

BMW Minis have had heated front screens as an option for some years. My Cooper S certainly had one.

I had a heated screen on my SEAT Alhambra in 1998, along with heated seats and a Westabo cabin heater. Damn fine vehicle for the winter months.

the ford system has been in use for well over 20 years now! MK3 granadas had it in about 1984!

I would have thought that if the other car manufacturers had access to heated front screens they would by now be on all cars...can you think of a car that doesnt have a heated rear screen......bumper cars and rag tops excluded..

Malcolm it was available on the 230 up to 30/07/04 but there is also a non-heated screen listed for the same chassis numbers, so not sure it standard

majority of rag tops have heated rear screens now! and as MB already has the technology there to use, if you can get a heated front screen on an £8k ford then SURELY it should be standard on a £25k+ MB

Well my SL500 did NOT have heated front screen..
But then the later ones seemed to have less as standard from what I gather.

Was this for UK cars though, cars for North Canada had the heated steering wheel, I have the three sales books and handbooks through till 2004 nothing in them on this and nowhere for a switch, plus not mentioned in WIS as far as I know.

I have never seen any visable wires in one either, othe than the TV and radio antennas

I can't find any ref to country simply chassis nos and to date in EPC

The screen was switched using the defrost button on the a/c control on the 220 and 211 I referenced at the start. But you are correct I can find no mention of the 230 with heated screen in WIS
