brake pads and discs

Hi all,

My local dealer is quoting me £300 for front disc pads and discs. They are amg brakes apparently.

I have a 2009 c class c220 cdi blueefficiency.

He tells me this is a special offer price!

The same brakes are on ebay for £170.

1.)should i buy the brakes and ask merc just to charge me for labour
2.)should i just pay £300 and get them to do the whole thing
3)should i buy a different brand of brakes and get an indie to do the whole job for around £180?

The same as Nariac, do get the disc measured up, most dealers tell you you need them when you have many thousands of miles left, 2 years motoring for some

That's the pads. I suspect the discs will be fine.

How many miles on this car?

And why would a 220 diesel need AMG brakes?

As above, the dealers always reccomend changing brakes before they really do need changing, a lot still have plenty of miles to get out of them before being replaced.

Get an opinion from an Independent specialist, I doubt that they will need changing yet, if they do, just like Naraic has said, it is most probably the pads.

So many people fall in the dealer trap of always replacing discs with the pads, as far as I am concerned discs will always outlast the pads, on my dads Passat TDI (he does 50k a year!), he managed to keep the pads going to 120k! The discs were absolutely fine, and I reckon he could have even replaced a second set of pads and the discs would still be OK.

Also, the dealer is talking nonsense, no AMG brakes for a C220 CDI, even if it is the Sport model, the only thing good on your braking system, is ventilated-discs, that is about it.

I reckon, if the pads do need replacing, ring up a few dealers, and negotiate the prices of the brake pads (sometimes up to 20% is taken off the retail price!), get them down to your nearest reputable Mercedes specialist, and have him fit them instead, I am sure it will work out cheaper. Or you can just ask your local main dealer to just replace the pads and work out a decent price, but first, make sure if anything really does need replacing.

A 320 doesn't so a 220 wont.

Anyway, at 40000 there is no way you need new discs.

I bought a replacement set of discs from a firm doing a special on ebay (about 18 months ago)
Looks like they still are

Absolutely brilliant for the money and very well made. Has made the world of difference to braking performance. ;)

Sadly the dustless pads are more pricey. My 'old' ones were ok but plain, and had a bit of a lip around the edge.
Very easy to replace, but must be done properly and checked fully seated / aligned.

Rotors and Pads

"Boris" has the annoying  Mercedes brake squeal from the front discs. I have stripped, cleaned and "Copperslipped" the calipers where required at contact point for the pads very carefully, and cleaned the retaining pins as well. The hub end of the rotors is worn down with a bit of an angle at the inner diameter as is the outer edge. The dust from the standard pads is really annoying and the discs are about a third worn, so I have gone for Ebay 160401876990 and EBC Ultimax pads (330697280084).

98000 miles and I reckon the rotors are original so time for a change :)

Given that I don't thrash the B****X  off the car, and need less noise from it when braking under meduim effort I feel the (Alleged) improved efficiency from new rotors and pads will justify the £100 all in and a few hours work.

Having just become a convert of Greenstuff, I can say that they have transformed the braking on my 270cdi Estate.

Local workshop has a brake disc skimmer that will align and skim your discs without removing them. The machine fits in place of the caliper and skims both sides of the disc at the same time. Kinda 'New for Old'.

Or you can DIY it with your angle grinder ...

I have in the past often cleaned off the rusty outer edges of my discs with an angle-grinder, and removed the 'lip' that occurs through wear. Naughty but nice.

Atleast this gives you a good idea of how much they would be to replace with premium, original quality parts
