My 1995 C200 came with a sales receipt that shows that the original owner paid MB for a:

"Tracke [sic] Tracker system = Lifetime subscription fee" for £389, which would have been a good chunk of money back then

Obviously I doubt that it would still work, but the phrase 'lifetime subscription fee' is there in black and white.

Does anyone know if such a system might still be operational, or indeed still has an operational one?

My main dealer referred me to 'Tracker' (presumably https://www.tracker.co.uk/) so my next step might be to contact them, but I doubt they'd be interested.

I've just had a live chat with Tracker's tech dept.

a) it's unlikely that the unit still works after 20+ years and no servicing
b) I can't revive the subscription as it only covered the original owner
c) If ever my car was nicked, Tracker would cooperate with the police to try and track it (even without an active subscription! - Amazing!)
d) The previous owner cannot track the car, only the police and Tracker themselves

Interesting, and the last point is obviously the only one that really matters.

Nice to know that they would still work with the police to track it if ever there was a need (on the off chance that the unit still works). However I assume it has an internal battery that will now be as dead as a dead thing.

My knowledge of them is that it was indeed an internal battery.

The units from cars taken were often 'tracked' to a litter bin somewhere.

When I bought my SL, i discovered that it had a tracker in the s/h history. I contacted the tracker people and was told it is still live and did I want connecting. They gave me a price (yer right) I also contacted my insurance company to see how much it saved me on premiums. Nothing!!!! In fact it increased my premiums  needless to say, it's not being revived so no increase in insurance. But what amazed me was, if the car is nicked and the police have the tracker details they contact the tracker people and track it  providing the tracker is not in the bin :(
