My pal has an ML that has started behaving badly recently.

Problems include alarm triggering apparently by itself, wipers activating by themselves, problems with interior lights, dashboard 'lighting up' and other such intermittent electrical problems.

    Any clues?

Is there a control unit for this lot located in the floor pan somewhere?

Do these cars suffer from blocked drain tubes which can lead to water ingress causing damage to circuitry somewhere?

Any help would be much appreciated,

    Thanks.

Has it been pressure washed/steam cleaned recently? are the carpets damp ? does the glass get steamed up easily?

None of those, but on the day it all started, it had been raining very heavily.

Check in the boot, drivers side access panel. There is a fuse box directly ahead, but the culprit could be the rear SAM (Signal Aquisition Module), which is lower down and sits below the boot floor level. This can get wet through either failure of the seal around the light or the seal on the 3rd brake light.

I had months of problems until the garage believed me and changed the SAM.

The seal is about £20 and the brake light about £60 IIRC.

    Hi Mark,

thanks for the guidance - I'll check the seal around the 3rd, high-level brake light, but what's the other seal you refer to please?

    Many thanks once again.

Drivers side rear light cluster. There are 2 seals on it. Supplied together.

    Pretty simple to change.

You may be able to get someone to disconnect the battery..under the drivers seat.. and remove the rear sam and fuse box and blow dry them with a hair dryer and they should work perfectly.
